CHAPTER 7 — The Man Everyone Trusted Was the Devil

Detective Rachel Monroe couldn't breathe.
Her father's face remained frozen on the black monitor long after the transmission ended.
Former Police Commissioner Thomas Monroe.
A decorated hero.
A man who had testified before Congress.
A man who had spent thirty-five years putting criminals behind bars.
And according to Adrian...
...he was the one who had protected them all.
"No..." Rachel whispered.
"My father would never..."
But before she could finish, her phone buzzed.
One new message.
No number.
Only a photograph.
It showed Rachel at six years old, sitting on her father's shoulders outside the old police academy.
On the back of the photo, someone had written:
"He loved you. He lied to you. Both can be true."
Rachel's hands shook.
Across the city, Sophia Blackwood was no longer being treated as a grieving widow.
She was under constant police surveillance.
Every bank account had been frozen.
Every phone call monitored.
Every movement recorded.
For the first time since pushing Adrian from the cliff, she realized she had never been the mastermind.
She had only been a pawn.
Then another anonymous package arrived.
Inside was Adrian's missing journal.
The very journal someone had stolen from his office.
Sophia opened it with trembling hands.
Most pages described business meetings, security concerns, and coded financial transactions.
But near the end, Adrian had written something addressed directly to her.
Sophia,
If you're reading this, then everything has already happened.
I know you tried to kill me.
I also know someone spent years convincing you that murdering me was your only escape.
They wanted you desperate.
They wanted you guilty.
Because once you became my murderer...
...you could never expose the real ones.
Sophia felt tears rolling down her face.
She turned the page.
Another sentence waited.
"You were being watched long before you became my wife."
Attached to the page was a hidden memory card.
Meanwhile...
Rachel secretly met Adrian exactly where the memory card instructed.
An abandoned lighthouse overlooking Black Raven Point.
At precisely midnight.
The fog rolled in from the ocean.
Footsteps echoed inside the empty tower.
Rachel raised her pistol.
"Adrian?"
A voice answered from the darkness.
"I'm here."
He stepped into the moonlight.
Alive.
Thinner.
A scar ran across his temple.
But he was unmistakably Adrian Blackwood.
Rachel stared at him in disbelief.
"You could have gone to the police."
Adrian gave a bitter smile.
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because your father was the police."
Silence filled the lighthouse.
Adrian slowly removed his jacket.
A long surgical scar stretched across his ribs.
"They didn't just try to kill me once."
He handed Rachel a thick folder.
Medical records.
Secret surveillance photos.
Wiretap transcripts.
Lists of judges.
Politicians.
Federal agents.
CEOs.
More than eighty names.
Every one connected by a single symbol stamped in red ink.
A black raven.
Rachel looked up.
"What is this?"
Adrian answered quietly.
"It isn't a family."
"It isn't a company."
"It's an organization."
"They've been controlling billionaires, elections, murders, and police investigations for over forty years."
Rachel swallowed hard.
"And my father?"
Adrian met her eyes.
"He wasn't their leader."
"He was the man who made sure nobody ever found them."
Suddenly—
A deafening explosion shattered the lighthouse windows.
The entire tower shook violently.
Flames erupted from the first floor.
Someone had planted explosives.
Adrian grabbed Rachel's arm.
"They found us."
As they sprinted toward the spiral staircase, a sniper's bullet ripped through the glass inches from Rachel's head.
Another bullet struck the wall beside Adrian.
Outside, black SUVs surrounded the lighthouse.
Masked gunmen emerged one by one.
Each wearing the same silver raven pin on their collars.
Adrian looked toward the burning exit... then toward the crashing waves nearly one hundred feet below.
There was only one way out.
He looked at Rachel and said,
"Last time they pushed me off a cliff."
"This time..."
"We jump together."

Before Rachel could answer, Adrian grabbed her hand—
And they leaped into the darkness as the lighthouse exploded behind them.
