CHAPTER 3 — The Family Secret Worth Billions

Detective Monroe reopened every sealed record connected to the Blackwood family.

Most had vanished.

Birth certificates.

Hospital files.

DNA archives.

Even adoption records.

Someone powerful had erased them decades ago.

Only one retired nurse remained alive.

Eighty-six-year-old Eleanor Hayes.

She agreed to meet.

Before she could speak...

A sniper's bullet shattered the café window.

Eleanor died instantly.

With her final breath she pressed a tiny brass key into Monroe's hand.

"Locker... seventeen..."

Inside Locker 17 at the old railway station lay a weathered cassette tape.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this... someone finally tried to kill me."

Monroe exchanged a stunned glance with Michael Graves.

The recording continued.

"I discovered the truth after my father's funeral."

"I am not Richard Blackwood's biological son."

"My real father was his younger brother, Daniel."

"But even that isn't the biggest secret."

A pause.

Then the sentence that changed everything.

"Sophia... is my biological sister."

The room fell silent.

Michael nearly dropped the recorder.

Sophia arrived moments later, demanding answers.

Monroe played the tape.

Sophia's face turned white.

"No..."

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

But the DNA report hidden beneath the cassette proved otherwise.

Thirty years earlier, two newborn babies had been switched to protect the Blackwood fortune after Daniel Blackwood died under suspicious circumstances.

Sophia and Adrian had unknowingly grown up in different families.

They met as adults.

Fell in love.

Married.

Neither had any idea they shared the same blood.

Adrian discovered the truth only seven months before his disappearance.

He secretly rewrote his will—not to punish Sophia, but to ensure the family fortune could never remain with either of them until the truth was exposed.

Then the final page emerged.

A recent handwritten note from Adrian.

"If Sophia is reading this, I already know she will try to kill me."

"I forgive her."

"But forgiveness is not the same as surrender."

At that exact moment...

Every television in the police station suddenly switched on.

A live video feed appeared.

A dimly lit room.

A familiar silhouette stepped into the light.

Bruised.

Bearded.

Alive.

Adrian Blackwood looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.

"You wanted my fortune, Sophia."

"But first..."

"...you're going to learn who really pushed me off that cliff."

The screen went black.

And everyone realized the murder had never been the real crime.

It had only been the beginning.
