CHAPTER 2 â The Woman He Tried to Kill Refused to Die
Sophie's fingers slipped one by one.
She closed her eyes.
This was the end.
Suddenlyâ
A powerful hand grabbed her wrist.
A railway mechanic who had been inspecting the rear carriage lunged forward just in time.
With another crew member pulling beside him, they dragged Sophie back onto the platform seconds before she disappeared into the canyon.
Ethan instantly changed his expression.
"My wife!" he shouted dramatically.
"She almost slipped!"
Passengers rushed over.
Some hugged Sophie.
Others praised Ethan for "trying to save her."
No one had seen what really happened.
Still trembling, Sophie looked at Ethan.
He smiled...
Not lovingly.
Threateningly.
His eyes warned her.
Say one word... and you'll die before this train reaches the next station.
Terrified and in shock, Sophie stayed silent.
Everyone believed the accident story.
Everyone...
Except the old railway mechanic.
While helping Sophie to her feet, he quietly noticed deep bruises around her wristâfinger marks that could only have come from someone forcing her over the railing.
Later that evening, he slipped a folded note into Sophie's coat pocket.
It contained only one sentence.
"I saw everything. Meet me alone in Car 9 at midnight."
Sophie's heart raced.
For the first time since the nightmare began...
She wasn't alone.
But when midnight finally arrived and she quietly opened the door to Car 9...
The old mechanic was nowhere to be found.
Instead...
The floor was covered in blood.
