CHAPTER 5 — His Own Mother Ordered the Hunt

Daniel couldn't believe what he was seeing.

His mother...

The woman who had raised him...

The woman who cried at his wedding...

Had just ordered armed men to capture a frightened teenage girl.

"Lily..." Daniel whispered. "Get behind me."

Lily shook her head.

"No, Dad. If they catch me, they'll kill all three of us."

Emily stared at Daniel.

"You knew your mother was involved?"

Daniel looked horrified.

"I swear... I had no idea."

Across the station, Margaret Harrington smiled without a trace of emotion.

She slowly removed her designer sunglasses and looked directly at Daniel.

"You've always been too soft," she said calmly.

"I protected this family for twenty years."

Daniel shouted back.

"You murdered Sophia!"

Margaret didn't even blink.

"No."

"I protected an empire."

She nodded once.

Instantly, four men in black suits rushed toward them.

People screamed.

Suitcases crashed across the station floor.

Daniel grabbed Emily and Lily, sprinting toward the emergency exit.

A gunshot echoed through the garage.

The bullet shattered a concrete pillar inches from Daniel's head.

Emily screamed.

"They're shooting!"

Daniel shoved both women behind a parked SUV.

"We split up."

"No!" Emily cried.

"If we stay together, we're dead."

Lily suddenly reached into her backpack.

She pulled out another flash drive.

"This isn't the only evidence."

Emily frowned.

"What is that?"

Lily's voice trembled.

"My mother copied every financial record before she died."

Daniel stared.

"Enough to expose everyone?"

Lily nodded.

"Enough to destroy the Harrington family forever."

Just then...

Daniel's phone vibrated.

One message.

No sender.

DON'T TRUST EMILY.

Daniel slowly lifted his eyes toward his wife.

May you like

For one terrifying second...

He wondered if the message was true.
