Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE CROWD

The luxury SUV glided through the neon-lit city streets. Inside the soundproof cabin, Leo was fast asleep, his head resting peacefully on Elena’s lap. Elena stroked his hair softly, her heart aching. For two years, she had tried to give him a normal life away from the cutthroat world of the ultra-rich. But danger had found them anyway.
Julian Vance sat across from her, scrolling through a holographic tablet.
"The shutdown of Vivian Cross Couture is 100% complete," Julian reported. "She has lost her licenses, her stores, and her reputation. By tomorrow morning, her name will be erased from the fashion industry."
"I don't care about Vivian anymore, Julian," Elena said quietly, her eyes fixed on her sleeping son. "Vivian was just a loud, arrogant fool. Tell me about the guest who pushed Leo."
Julian tapped his tablet and brought up high-definition security footage from the rooftop terrace. He swiped the video forward to the moment right before the chaos happened.
Elena leaned in to watch.
On the screen, six-year-old Leo was standing quietly near the juice bar. Suddenly, a tall woman wearing a heavy silk cloak pretend-stumbled and shoved Leo with deliberate force straight into the champagne tower, causing the glass to shatter and attracting Vivian's rage.
"Enhance her face," Elena commanded.
Julian zoomed in. The woman was wearing oversized sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, but as she turned away from the camera, a distinct silver tattoo was visible on the back of her neck: a viper coiled around a broken crown.
Elena’s breath hitched. Her blood ran ice-cold.
"The Broken Crown Syndicate," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "The same people who caused the car crash two years ago... the crash that killed my husband, Arthur."
"Yes, ma'am," Julian said grimly. "We thought they went into hiding after Arthur's death. But it appears they've been watching you all along. They knew you were hiding in plain sight at Vivian’s boutique. They used Vivian’s explosive temper to provoke an incident."
"They wanted to force me out into the open," Elena realized, her fist tightening. "They wanted me to reveal my identity."
"And you did, ma'am," Julian said. "By shutting down Vivian’s empire tonight, you announced to the entire underworld that Elena Sterling is back."
A heavy silence filled the vehicle. Elena looked out the window at the flashing city lights. For two years, she had been running. She thought hiding would keep Leo safe. But now she realized the truth: as long as her enemies were breathing, her son would never be secure.
"Julian," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave into pure ice.
"Yes, Madam Sterling?"
"Call the family council. Reactivate the Sterling Private Military Division. Re-open my husband's murder file."
Julian’s eyes widened slightly in shock. "Ma'am... the family council hasn't met since Arthur's funeral. Your father-in-law, Lord Vane Sterling, still blames you for Arthur's death. If you return to the Sterling Estate..."
"I don't care if Vane hates me," Elena interrupted sharply. "They hunted my husband. Now they are targeting my son. I am done hiding."
Suddenly, the SUV’s driver slammed on the brakes! The tires shrieked against the asphalt.
Leo jolted awake, crying out. "Mommy!"
"Hold on!" Julian yelled, grabbing the handle above his door.
Ahead of them, three black armored trucks slammed to a halt, completely blocking the highway bridge. Behind them, two more armored vehicles pulled up, trapping Elena’s SUV in the middle of the bridge over the roaring river below.
The doors of the black trucks flew open. Dozens of men clad in tactical gear and wearing viper masks stepped out, carrying heavy weaponry.
One of the masked men walked forward, holding a megaphone.
"Elena Sterling!" the masked leader roared. "Lord Vane Sterling sends his regards! Hand over the boy, and we might let you jump off this bridge alive!"
Elena held Leo tightly against her chest, shielding his eyes. Her heart pounded, but her mind remained razor-sharp.
She turned to Julian. "Did you bring it?"
May you like
Julian smiled a dark, dangerous smile. He reached under his seat and pulled out a small black remote control with a single red switch.
"Madam Sterling," Julian said softly. "Did you really think I brought you out tonight without backup?"
