Chapter 1 – The Girl Who Refused to Leave the Gate

Every evening, just before the sun disappeared beyond the dusty hills, twelve-year-old Lily stood silently beside the old wooden ranch gate.
She never missed a sunset.
The townspeople thought she was strange.
"She's waiting for someone who isn't coming," they whispered.
Some pitied her.
Others laughed.
But Lily ignored every stare.
Her tiny hands gripped the weathered wood as if letting go would erase the last hope she had left.
Three months earlier, her father had ridden out through that very gate on horseback after promising, "I'll be home before the next full moon."
He never returned.
The sheriff called it an accident.
The search party claimed they found nothing except an abandoned horse and a torn leather saddlebag.
No body.
No clues.
Just silence.
Everyone eventually accepted that he was dead.
Everyone...
Except Lily.
Every afternoon after finishing chores, she walked the same dusty road, stopping at the gate exactly as the sun began to fall.
Some evenings she imagined hearing hoofbeats.
Other times she thought she saw a familiar shadow in the distance.
Each time, disappointment crushed her heart again.
One evening, while the wind carried clouds of dust across the ranch, an elderly cowboy named Samuel slowly approached on horseback.
Samuel had known Lily's father since they were boys.
He climbed down from his horse, staring at the horizon with tired eyes.
"You've been waiting every day," he said softly.
Lily nodded.
"I know he's still alive."
Samuel remained silent.
His face suddenly turned pale.
After several long seconds, he reached into the pocket of his old denim jacket and pulled out something wrapped in faded cloth.
It was a silver pocket watch.
Lily instantly recognized it.
It belonged to her father.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Where did you get this?"
Samuel swallowed hard.
"I promised I would never tell anyone..."
He looked over his shoulder as if someone might be listening.
"...but your father left me a message."
Lily's heart nearly stopped.
Samuel leaned closer.
"He said if he never came back..."
"...you must never let anyone open the old red barn."
Before Lily could ask another question...
A loud engine echoed across the ranch.
Three black SUVs rolled through the entrance.
And the man sitting in the front passenger seat...
May you like
was wearing her father's jacket.
