Chapter 4 – The Man Beneath the Barn

The three knocks echoed again.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Impossible.

Every person standing inside the barn heard them.

The sheriff frowned.

"What was that?"

Samuel didn't answer.

His face had turned ghostly white.

Lily dropped to her knees and pressed her ear against the wooden floor.

Then...

Another knock.

Three more.

Exactly the same rhythm her father had taught her when she was little.

"Three knocks means don't speak. Someone is listening."

Tears filled Lily's eyes.

"He's alive..."

Before anyone could react, Caroline screamed.

"She's lying! Tear this barn apart!"

The men in black suits rushed forward with crowbars, smashing through old crates and wooden beams.

Samuel stepped in front of the trapdoor.

"You'll have to kill me first."

One of the men punched the old cowboy to the ground.

Lily cried out and ran toward him.

That was all the distraction they needed.

A crowbar slammed into the hidden trapdoor.

CRACK!

The wooden cover split open.

Cold air rushed out from the darkness below.

Everyone stared.

The underground room was empty.

The metal boxes had been opened.

The documents were gone.

Only one lantern remained, still warm.

Someone had been there only minutes earlier.

The sheriff slowly descended the stairs.

At the end of the tunnel, he found something that made his blood run cold.

Fresh muddy footprints.

They led to a narrow passage hidden behind a stone wall.

The tunnel stretched beneath the ranch...

and disappeared into the surrounding forest.

"Someone escaped," the sheriff whispered.

Caroline suddenly looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

She hadn't expected the tunnel to exist.

She hadn't expected anyone to escape through it.

Lily noticed the fear in her stepmother's eyes for the first time.

Then...

A deputy ran into the barn holding a small backpack.

"We found this hanging on the fence outside!"

Inside the backpack was a bottle of water...

a map...

and a small voice recorder.

The sheriff pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then a weak, exhausted voice spoke.

It was unmistakable.

Lily collapsed to her knees.

It was her father's voice.

"If you're hearing this... I escaped. But I can't come home yet. The people hunting me are wearing badges... and one of them is standing beside you right now."

Silence swallowed the barn.

Every deputy instinctively looked at one another.

The sheriff slowly turned his head.

One of his own officers quietly reached for his gun.

May you like

And smiled.
