Chapter 3 – The Woman in the Window

Lily ran back to the house with the letter pressed against her chest.
Her hands were shaking.
Her father had not died the day he disappeared.
He had survived.
And someone had made sure the whole town believed he was gone.
Inside the ranch house, every light was off except one.
The upstairs bedroom.
Her stepmother, Caroline, was standing by the window.
Watching the red barn.
Lily froze.
Samuel grabbed her arm and whispered, "Don't move."
But it was too late.
Caroline slowly turned her head.
Even from the yard, Lily could see her smile.
The next morning, Caroline acted normal.
She made breakfast.
She hummed softly.
She even kissed Lily on the forehead.
But Lily noticed something terrifying.
On Caroline's finger was her father's wedding ring.
Not her own.
His.
Lily forced herself to stay calm.
"Where did you get that ring?" she asked.
Caroline's smile disappeared for half a second.
Then she said, "Your father gave it to me before he left."
Lily knew it was a lie.
That afternoon, the men in black suits returned.
This time, they brought police officers.
Caroline stood beside them and said coldly, "My daughter is unstable. She keeps inventing stories about her father."
Lily's heart dropped.
The sheriff stepped forward.
"Lily, we need to search the barn."
Samuel blocked the door.
"No one touches that barn."
Caroline’s voice turned sharp.
"Open it."
Then Lily heard it.
A faint knocking sound.
Not from outside.
From beneath the barn floor.
Three slow knocks.
Samuel went pale.
Because years ago, Lily's father had taught them that signal.

It meant:
I'm alive.
