CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Inside Vault 17 Changed Everything

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

A tiny brass key.

One sentence.

And suddenly my late husband's death no longer looked like an accident.

The elderly man extended his hand.

"My name is Arthur Hayes."

"I was Daniel's attorney."

"He made me promise something."

"If anything happened to him..."

"...I was to help only you."

Behind us, the front door suddenly opened again.

Ryan stepped onto the porch.

His confident smile disappeared the moment he saw Arthur.

"You."

"What are you doing here?"

Arthur calmly adjusted his glasses.

"Fulfilling your brother's final instructions."

Margaret rushed outside.

When she noticed the key in my hand...

...all the color drained from her face.

"Give me that!"

She lunged forward so violently that she nearly slipped on the wet stone steps.

That single reaction told me everything.

The key mattered.

A lot.

Arthur quietly stepped between us.

"Touch her again..."

"...and I'll call the police."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"She's manipulating you."

Arthur smiled without emotion.

"No."

"Your brother prepared for this years ago."

Years?

Daniel had expected this?

Before anyone could speak again, Arthur opened the back door of the sedan.

"Mrs. Carter."

"We don't have much time."

"They'll try to reach the vault before us."

As we drove away, I looked back.

Margaret wasn't crying for her son.

She wasn't comforting Lily.

She wasn't grieving.

She was screaming at Ryan.

"Find them!"

"Before she opens it!"

An hour later we arrived at an old private bank on the edge of downtown.

No flashy signs.

No crowds.

Only steel doors and silent security guards.

Arthur led me into an underground vault room.

Rows upon rows of numbered safety boxes stretched across the walls.

He stopped at one.

17.

My hands shook as I inserted the key.

The lock clicked open.

Inside wasn't cash.

It wasn't jewelry.

It was a thick black binder...

...a stack of hard drives...

...and dozens of sealed envelopes.

The first page carried Daniel's handwriting.

"If you're reading this, I didn't die by chance."

I nearly dropped the binder.

Arthur closed the vault door behind us.

"You should keep reading."

Inside were photographs.

Secret financial records.

Insurance documents.

Private recordings.

Bank transfers worth millions of dollars.

Every page pointed toward one horrifying possibility.

Someone had been stealing from Daniel's company for years.

Every trail...

...led back to his own family.

Then I reached the final envelope.

Written across the front:

FOR EMILY ALONE.

With trembling fingers, I opened it.

Inside was one final letter.

"Emily... if my mother ever forces you out of the house, it means she knows what I discovered."

"Do not go to the police yet."

"Someone inside the department has already been paid."

"Trust no one..."

"Except the person waiting outside this vault."

Confused, I looked toward the door.

Arthur frowned.

"I didn't tell anyone we were here."

Three slow knocks echoed through the steel room.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Then a calm female voice spoke from the other side.

"Emily..."

"I worked with Daniel."

May you like

"And if you open this door..."

"...I'll show you the video that proves he was murdered."
