CHAPTER 6 — The Truth About Daniel's Death Finally Came Out

The street fel
l completely silent.
The lead detective unfolded a document.
"Ryan Carter."
"You are under arrest for corporate fraud..."
"...conspiracy..."
"...and the suspected murder of Daniel Carter."
Ashley screamed.
Margaret staggered backward.
"This is insanity!"
"You have no proof!"
Claire calmly stepped forward.
"I do."
She handed the detective Daniel's flash drive.
"And several backups."
Arthur added another envelope.
"And Daniel's sworn statement."
The detective nodded.
"We've already verified the recordings."
Ryan suddenly laughed.
"You'll never convict me."
"It was ruled an accident."
The detective looked directly into his eyes.
"It was."
"Until someone anonymously delivered new evidence at six o'clock this morning."
Ryan slowly turned toward Emily.
"You."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"I didn't even know it existed."
The detective smiled slightly.
"Your husband planned everything."
"He knew someone might silence him."
"He made sure the truth would survive."
A forensic investigator opened another file.
"Brake lines intentionally cut."
"Vehicle GPS manipulated."
"Insurance policy changed forty-eight hours beforehand."
"The accident scene was staged."
Every sentence struck Ryan like a hammer.
Margaret suddenly grabbed her son's arm.
"Don't say anything."
But it was too late.
Ryan lost control.
"I did everything for this family!"
"I wasn't going to let Daniel hand everything to that nobody!"
The detective looked up.
"I'm sorry..."
"Could you repeat that?"
Ryan realized what he had just admitted.
His face turned ghostly white.
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
Ashley burst into tears.
Margaret screamed at the officers.
"You can't take my son!"
One detective answered quietly.
"Your son stopped being a businessman..."
"...the moment he became a murderer."
As Ryan was pushed toward the police car, he looked at Emily with pure hatred.
"You think you've won?"
Emily didn't answer.
She simply picked up Lily's worn teddy bear from the back seat of Arthur's car.
She gently sewed its torn ear back into place using a tiny emergency sewing kit Lily always carried.
Lily hugged it tightly.
"It's okay now."
Emily smiled softly.
"No, sweetheart."
"It's finally safe now."
Just as the police convoy began to leave...
Another black SUV arrived.
A gray-haired woman stepped out.
She introduced herself quietly.
"My name is Eleanor Brooks."
"I was Daniel's biological mother."
Everyone froze.
Margaret's face lost every trace of color.
Eleanor looked directly at Emily.
"I've spent thirty-two years looking for my son."
"Margaret didn't just steal his company..."
"...she stole my child."
Emily stood speechless.
The nightmare she thought had ended...
May you like
...had only uncovered an even darker secret.
To be continued...
