CHAPTER 7 — “She Was Never His Mother…” The Secret That Destroyed the Carter Name

No one moved.
Not the detectives.
Not the executives.
Not even Ryan, who stood handcuffed beside the police cruiser.
The rain seemed to disappear beneath the silence.
Margaret stared at the gray-haired woman as though she had seen a ghost.
"You..."
"...you're dead."
The woman smiled sadly.
"I almost was."
"My name is Eleanor Brooks."
"I gave birth to Daniel Carter thirty-eight years ago."
"I never abandoned him."
Emily felt Lily squeeze her hand tighter.
"What are you talking about?" Emily whispered.
Eleanor slowly reached into her handbag and removed a faded photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.
The baby wore a tiny silver bracelet.
The exact same bracelet Daniel had kept locked in his desk for years.
Arthur immediately recognized it.
"I remember that bracelet."
Daniel once told him,
"It was the only thing I had before I was adopted."
Margaret suddenly lunged forward.
"She's lying!"
"She's a con artist!"
But Eleanor calmly handed another folder to the detective.
Inside were hospital records...
DNA test results...
Adoption documents...
And one explosive revelation.
Thirty-eight years earlier...
Margaret had worked as an administrator at the same hospital where Eleanor gave birth.
A fire had broken out in the maternity ward.
During the chaos...
One newborn disappeared.
The case was never solved.
Until now.
The detective slowly looked at Margaret.
"You kidnapped him."
Margaret burst into tears.
"I loved him!"
"I gave him everything!"
"You can't call that kidnapping!"
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"You stole every birthday..."
"Every Christmas..."
"Every hug..."
"You stole my son."
Ryan lowered his head.
Even he hadn't known.
Ashley covered her mouth, unable to believe what she was hearing.
Then Arthur quietly opened the last envelope Daniel had left behind.
Across the top were the words:
IF THE TRUTH EVER COMES OUT... READ THIS TO EVERYONE.
Arthur unfolded the letter.
Daniel's handwriting filled the page.
"If you're hearing this, then the secret I've carried my entire life has finally surfaced."
"I discovered five years ago that Margaret wasn't my biological mother."
"I confronted her."
"She admitted everything."
"She begged me not to expose her because she said prison would kill her."
"So I stayed silent..."
"Not because she deserved mercy..."
"But because I couldn't bear to destroy the only family I had ever known."
Emily covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
Arthur continued reading.
"But if anything happens to me..."
"Don't protect anyone."
"Protect Emily."
"Protect Lily."
"And let the truth bury the Carter lies forever."
Even the detectives lowered their heads.
For the first time...
Margaret wasn't seen as a grieving mother.
She was seen for what she truly was.
A woman who had built an empire on a stolen child.
As officers led her toward another police car, she looked back at Emily.
"You'll lose everything."
Emily answered calmly.
May you like
"No."
"You already did."
