Chapter 6 – The Woman Who Raised Emily Was Never Her Savior

Three days later...

Police tracked Victoria to an abandoned lakeside cabin.

But she wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was an elderly woman Emily recognized immediately.

Mrs. Carter.

The foster mother who had raised her from the age of four.

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"You..."

Mrs. Carter lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Emily's voice cracked.

"You told me my parents abandoned me."

"I was paid to."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

Richard stepped forward.

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria smiled.

"The nurse didn't keep the baby."

"She sold her."

Emily felt the world collapse beneath her.

Victoria continued,

"Mrs. Carter wasn't rescuing abandoned children."

"She was hiding them."

Detectives searched the cabin.

Inside a locked wooden chest, they discovered dozens of fake birth certificates...

Forged adoption papers...

Old photographs...

And a worn leather notebook filled with names.

Children who had vanished without a trace.

Emily turned the pages with trembling hands.

Near the bottom was her own name.

Next to it were six chilling words:

"Never let Richard find her. Ever."

Richard clenched his fists.

"Who ordered this?"

Victoria slowly looked toward the doorway.

Then she smiled.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

"The person behind everything..."

"...is already inside your house."

At that exact moment, Richard's phone rang.

His longtime family butler was calling.

With a shaking voice, the old man whispered:

"Sir... someone has opened your late wife's private bedroom."

"There was a hidden safe behind the fireplace."

"And inside..."

"...we found a letter addressed to Emily."

The envelope had never been opened.

It had been waiting for twenty-two years.
