CHAPTER 4 — The Apology That Came Too Late
For the first time in his life, Adrian Blackwood was not being applauded.
He was being watched.
The boardroom remained silent as the vote was finalized.
Removed as CEO.
Suspended from all executive authority.
Public investigation pending.
Adrian stared at the papers in front of him as if the words might change if he refused to blink.
“This is my company,” he whispered.
Emma looked at him calmly.
“No,” she said. “It was only borrowed.”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Her phone, the same phone she had used to record Emma’s humiliation, began buzzing nonstop.
Sponsors.
Managers.
Friends.
News outlets.
Everyone wanted answers.
Vanessa opened one message and gasped.
Her luxury brand contract had been terminated.
Then another.
Her charity gala invitation revoked.
Then another.
Her social media followers were turning against her.
The video had gone viral.
But not the way she expected.
People weren’t laughing at Emma.
They were calling Vanessa cruel.
They were calling Adrian a monster.
And they were asking one question:
What kind of man pours coffee on a waitress because he thinks she is powerless?
Adrian suddenly stood.
“Emma,” he said, his voice shaking.
Everyone turned.
He walked toward her, no longer arrogant, no longer untouchable.
“I was angry. I made a mistake.”
Emma said nothing.
He swallowed hard.
“I’ll pay you. Whatever you want. A public apology. A settlement. A foundation in your name.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“You still think this is about money?”
Adrian froze.
“You humiliated me because you thought I had nothing,” she continued. “Now you’re apologizing because you found out I have power.”
The words hit harder than any punishment.
Adrian looked around the boardroom.
No one defended him.
Not one person.
Then Emma placed a new document on the table.
“This company will no longer protect people who abuse others beneath them.”
The chairman nodded.
“Effective immediately, Blackwood Technologies will begin a full internal ethics investigation.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Because he knew exactly what they might find.
Old complaints.
Silenced employees.
Paid settlements.
People he had crushed and forgotten.
Emma stood.
“And Adrian…”
He looked up.
She paused at the door.
“The waitress you destroyed yesterday was kinder to you than the owner will be today.”
