CHAPTER 5 — The Secret File Under the Diner

That night, Emma returned to Maple Street Diner.
Not as a waitress.
Not as a victim.
But as someone searching for the truth.
The diner was dark except for one light glowing in the back hallway.
The elderly security chief, Mr. Hayes, waited beside the storage room.
“You need to see something,” he said.
Emma followed him downstairs into the basement.
The air smelled of dust, oil, and old wood.
Behind a broken freezer, Mr. Hayes pushed aside a metal shelf.
There was a hidden safe built into the wall.
Emma stared at it.
“This was here the whole time?”
Mr. Hayes nodded.
“Your mother hid it before she disappeared.”
Emma’s breath caught.
“My real mother?”
He entered the code.
The safe clicked open.
Inside was a bundle of letters, a velvet baby blanket, and a small cassette recorder.
Emma’s hands trembled as she pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Soft.
Tired.
Terrified.
“If my daughter ever finds this… her name is not Emma Carter.”
A tear slipped down Emma’s cheek.
“Her real name is Eleanor Hawthorne.”
Mr. Hayes lowered his eyes.
The recording continued.
“My brother wants the trust. He has friends inside the company. If anything happens to me, protect my baby. Do not trust Blackwood.”
Emma’s blood went cold.
Do not trust Blackwood.
She looked at Mr. Hayes.
“What does that mean?”
Before he could answer, footsteps sounded upstairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
Not one person.
Several.
Mr. Hayes quickly turned off the recorder.
Then a voice echoed from above.
“Emma?”
It was Adrian.
But he was not alone.
Emma stepped back.
Mr. Hayes reached inside his coat.
“Stay behind me.”
The basement door creaked open.
Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs, pale and desperate.
“I need to talk to you,” he said.
Emma’s voice hardened.
“You followed me?”
Adrian shook his head.
“I came because I found something too.”
He held up an old company file.
On the cover was the Hawthorne family crest.
And underneath it, one name was stamped in red:
VINCENT HAWTHORNE.
Emma stared.
“That’s my uncle.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“He’s alive.”
Mr. Hayes went completely still.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Adrian stepped down one stair.
“No. It’s worse than that.”
He looked directly at Emma.
May you like
“He’s been controlling my family for years.”
Then all the lights in the diner went out.
