Chapter 1 - The Dark Discovery Under the Rags

Headline: "SHE WASN'T DONE!" – The Terrifying Secret Rescuers Uncovered Beneath the Floorboards of the Abandoned House!

The flashlight beams cut through the thick, choking dust of the abandoned house, dancing over peeling wallpaper and rotting floorboards. Officer Davies and Mike Anderson stood frozen. The rescue team’s medic, a hardened woman named Elena, was already on her knees beside the mother dog—a beautiful but emaciated black Labrador mix. She was too weak to lift her head, her ribs pushing against her dull fur like the hoops of a barrel.

"She’s severely dehydrated, suffering from acute mastitis, and has a deep gash on her hind leg," Elena whispered, her voice tight. "She wouldn't have survived another twenty-four hours. Lily the cat didn't just find these puppies; she realized their mother’s milk had dried up because she was starving to death. Lily took over."

Mike felt a lump in his throat. His wife, Sarah, and daughter, Grace, had been right all along. Lily wasn't a thief. She was a tactical savior, operating a one-cat extraction mission.

But as the rescue team carefully lifted the frail mother dog onto a stretcher, a strange, muffled sound echoed through the hollow silence of the house.

Scratch. Whimper. Clack.

It wasn’t coming from the mother dog.

"Wait," Mike said, his hand flying out to stop Officer Davies. "Listen."

The sound came from beneath a pile of heavy, mold-infested moving blankets tucked deep into the corner of the closet. The blankets were soaked in grease and covered in heavy wooden debris, as if someone had intentionally piled junk on top of them to hide what was underneath.

Lily had spent hours tearing at these exact blankets. There were fresh scratches on the wood, and a tuft of caramel cat fur snagged on a rusted nail nearby.

Elena approached the pile cautiously, pulling away the heavy wooden boards first. As she dragged the filthy, heavy blankets aside, the flashlight illuminated a rusted iron grate set directly into the hardwood floor—a forgotten coal chute leading straight down into a pitch-black, sealed sub-basement.

Elena shone her light down into the narrow shaft.

What she saw made her gasp, dropping her flashlight. It clattered against the iron grate, its beam cutting through the darkness below to reveal a sight that turned Mike Anderson’s stomach to ice.

There wasn't just a mother dog and her puppies in this house. Lily had been trying to dig through the floorboards to get to something much bigger, much more dangerous, and entirely unexpected. Down in the darkness, two glowing eyes stared back up at them—and they didn't belong to a canine.
