Chapter 5 - The Night of the Hunters

Headline: NO ESCAPE! The High-Stakes Midnight Ambush at the Safe House That Changed Everything!

"Get down!" Mike yelled, throwing himself over Sarah and Grace as the glass of the kitchen window exploded inward.

The dark silhouette of a man wearing night-vision goggles vaulted through the broken frame, a silenced pistol raised in his hand. But before he could level the weapon, a heavy porcelain vase sailed through the air, striking him squarely in the temple. Mike had thrown it with everything he had. The assassin stumbled backward, his gun firing wildly into the drywall.

Outside, the sound of automatic gunfire erupted. The federal agents guarding the perimeter were engaged in a fierce shootout in the driveway. Dr. Harrison wasn't playing games; he had brought his entire enforcement team to eliminate the evidence—and the family.

"The basement! Move!" Agent Vance shouted, firing three rounds down the dark hallway to cover their retreat.

Mike, Sarah, and Grace scrambled down the narrow wooden stairs into the concrete basement, slamming the heavy oak door shut behind them. Grace was sobbing, clutching Lily tightly against her chest. The cat was vibrating with tension, her heart hammering like a trapped bird, but she didn't scratch Grace. She knew her human baby was terrified.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps thudded on the floorboards directly above their heads.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

"I know you're down there, Mike," a calm, chillingly familiar voice echoed through the floorboards. It was Dr. Harrison. The warm, comforting voice that had helped them through Lily’s stillbirth was now dripping with psychopathic malice.

"You should have just let Mrs. Parker take the puppies," Harrison sighed, his footsteps moving closer to the basement door. "A cat stealing puppies is a cute viral story. A cat exposing a syndicate that services billionaires? That’s a death sentence. Open the door, Mike. Make it easy on Grace."

Inside the basement, Mike looked around frantically for a weapon. There was nothing but old paint cans and a rusted metal pipe. He grabbed the pipe, stepping in front of his wife and daughter.

BOOM!

The lock on the basement door shattered under a heavy shotgun blast. The door swung open, revealing the tall silhouette of Dr. Harrison, a tactical shotgun leveled at Mike’s chest. His face was cold, illuminated only by the green glow of his tactical gear.

"Goodbye, Andersons," Harrison smiled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

But he forgot to look up.

Lily had slipped out of Grace’s arms minutes ago, climbing silently up the exposed wooden rafters of the basement ceiling. As Harrison stepped through the threshold, the caramel cat dropped from the ceiling like a falling boulder, landing squarely on Harrison’s head.

She didn't just scratch—she went for his eyes. Harrison shrieked, dropping the shotgun as he stumbled backward up the stairs, clawing frantically at the furious animal attached to his face. The shotgun clattered down the concrete steps, landing right at Mike’s feet.
