Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Coal Chute

"Get the crowbar! Now!" Officer Davies yelled into his radio, his professional composure shattering.

Mike pressed his face against the iron grate, his eyes adjusting to the dim, chaotic light of the dropped flashlight. Down in the narrow, suffocating stone vault, huddled amidst old coal dust and rusted chains, was a second animal. But as the light caught its features, Mike realized with a jolt of pure adrenaline that it wasn't a stray dog.

It was a bleeding, terrified, purebred Eurasian Lynx cub—an exotic, highly illegal, and incredibly expensive wild feline.

Beside the cub lay a heavy, professional-grade tranquilizer dart rifle and three empty metal cages, all stamped with a chilling logo: Apex Exotic Imports.

"This isn't a tragic story of a stray dog," Officer Davies muttered, his face turning pale as the rescue team pried the rusted iron grate open with a loud, metallic screech. "This is a drop-site for an international animal smuggling ring. And whoever runs it left these animals here to starve when the heat got too high."

The rescue team carefully extracted the Lynx cub. It was incredibly weak, its front paw bound tight with thick, industrial duct tape to keep it from scratching. Lily had evidently been trying to chew through the floorboards above the cub, unable to carry something so heavy up the narrow chute, which is why she had focused her energy on rescuing the smaller, accessible canine puppies first.

As they loaded the mother dog and the exotic cub into the rescue van, Mike’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. It was Sarah. Her voice was frantic, drowned out by the sound of furious, aggressive shouting in the background.

"Mike! You need to come home right now!" Sarah screamed into the receiver. "The neighbors—Mrs. Parker and a group of strange men—they’re in our yard! They brought a truck! They're trying to force their way into the house to take the puppies by force! They claim we stole valuable property!"

Before Mike could answer, a loud crash echoed through the phone, followed by Grace’s terrified scream and the unmistakable, furious screech of Lily the cat.
