CHAPTER 1 — The Woman They Called "Not Good Enough"

"You will never marry that girl."
Those were the first words Daniel Sterling's father spoke after meeting Emily Carter.
Not...
"Nice to meet you."
Not...
"Tell us about yourself."
Just rejection.
Silence swallowed the dining room.
Emily lowered her eyes.
She had expected this.
After all...
She had arrived wearing a simple navy-blue dress she'd owned for nearly four years.
No designer jewelry.
No luxury handbag.
No expensive perfume announcing her arrival before she entered the room.
To the Sterling family...
She looked ordinary.
And ordinary people did not belong in billionaire families.
Daniel's mother, Victoria Sterling, slowly placed her crystal wine glass on the table.
"Daniel," she said coldly.
"Your father built this family empire over forty years."
"Our name opens doors across New York."
"Our family appears on magazine covers."
She glanced at Emily.
"And this girl works..."
Emily smiled politely.
"I'm an elementary school teacher."
Victoria almost laughed.
"A teacher?"
"My gardener earns more than teachers."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"Mom..."
"I'm speaking."
Victoria didn't even look at him.
She continued staring directly at Emily.
"Where did you grow up?"
"A small town in Vermont."
"And your parents?"
"My father passed away when I was twelve."
"My mother owns a small bookstore."
The room became even quieter.
Daniel's younger sister Sophia exchanged a smug smile with her fiancé.
A bookstore.
To them...
That sounded almost embarrassing.
Richard Sterling folded his arms.
"So your family has no investments?"
"No corporations?"
"No properties in Manhattan?"
Emily answered honestly.
"No."
Richard nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Then he looked at Daniel.
"You are marrying beneath your station."
Emily's face remained calm.
But beneath the table...
Her fingers trembled.
Daniel immediately reached for her hand.
"I love her."
Richard's voice exploded.
"Love doesn't protect family wealth."
"Love doesn't maintain reputation."
"Love doesn't impress investors."
Victoria leaned closer.
"Emily..."
"I'll make this easy."
She opened her handbag.
Pulled out a checkbook.
And calmly wrote...
Five million dollars.
She slid the check across the table.
"Leave Daniel."
Emily stared at the number.
Five million.
Enough money to change almost anyone's life.
Victoria smiled.
"You'll never have to work again."
"Take it."
"Disappear."
"And let Daniel marry someone suitable."
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair crashed onto the marble floor.
"Enough!"
But Emily gently touched his arm.
"It's okay."
She slowly picked up the check.
Studied it.
Folded it carefully.
Everyone thought...
She had accepted.
Sophia whispered with a smirk,
"I knew she'd sell him."
Victoria smiled victoriously.
Richard relaxed into his chair.
Money solved everything.
Didn't it?
Emily quietly stood.
Walked toward Victoria.
Placed the folded check back onto the table.
Untouched.
"I appreciate the offer."
"But you cannot buy something that isn't for sale."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Emily continued softly.
"I didn't fall in love with Daniel's money."
"I fell in love with the man who still buys flowers for strangers on Mother's Day because he knows someone out there misses their mom."
Daniel looked at her...
Speechless.
She remembered something no one else even knew.
Richard scoffed.
"Beautiful speech."
"But reality is different."
Emily simply smiled.
"Sometimes."
"It is."
Then she and Daniel left.
Behind them...
Victoria whispered,
"She'll come back."
"They always do."
Neither of them noticed...
An elderly man sitting quietly at the far corner of the restaurant.
He had watched every second.
Every insult.
Every humiliation.
And after Emily walked away...
He made one phone call.
May you like
"Prepare the boardroom."
"It's finally time."
