CHAPTER 4 — The Billion-Dollar Test

Three months after the wedding...

The headlines still wouldn't stop.

"Teacher Marries Billionaire Heiress in Secret."

"The Woman Who Rejected Five Million Was Worth Eighteen Billion."

Television hosts debated.

Business magazines analyzed.

Social media exploded.

But inside the Sterling mansion...

Silence ruled.

Richard Sterling had never experienced humiliation like this.

For decades...

He had judged people by numbers.

Net worth.

Annual revenue.

Investment portfolios.

Now the entire country knew...

He had mistaken true character for poverty.

One rainy afternoon...

His assistant rushed into the office.

"Sir..."

"Ashford Global has requested a meeting."

Richard immediately stood.

"The Chairwoman herself?"

The assistant nodded.

"Tomorrow morning."

Richard barely slept that night.

For years...

Winning a contract with Ashford Global had been his biggest business dream.

Now...

His daughter-in-law controlled the decision.

The next morning...

Richard arrived thirty minutes early.

His expensive Italian suit was flawless.

His presentation contained six months of preparation.

At precisely nine o'clock...

The boardroom doors opened.

Every executive stood.

Emily entered.

Still wearing simple clothes.

Still carrying the same leather notebook she had used as a schoolteacher.

Nothing about her had changed...

Except the respect everyone else gave her.

Richard slowly stood.

Emily smiled politely.

"Good morning, Mr. Sterling."

Not...

"Father."

Not...

"Dad."

Just...

"Mr. Sterling."

The words hurt more than he expected.

The presentation lasted two hours.

Richard explained every strategy.

Every forecast.

Every financial projection.

When he finished...

The room became silent.

Emily closed the folder.

Then asked only one question.

"If another company offered ten percent more profit..."

"Would you abandon your employees?"

Richard hesitated.

"What?"

Emily repeated calmly.

"If profits increase..."

"Do people become disposable?"

Nobody in the room spoke.

Richard suddenly realized...

This wasn't a business interview.

It was a character test.

He slowly answered.

"Years ago..."

"I probably would have."

"But not anymore."

Emily studied his face.

She could tell...

He wasn't pretending.

Then she smiled.

"The contract is yours."

Richard blinked.

"You already decided?"

Emily nodded.

"I wasn't evaluating your company."

"I was evaluating the man who leads it."

For the first time in months...

Richard smiled.

May you like

Not because he had won a contract.

But because someone believed he had become a better person.
