CHAPTER 2 — The Secret She Never Needed to Tell

For the next six months...

The Sterling family declared war on their son's relationship.

Every Sunday dinner...

Emily was excluded.

Every holiday...

Daniel was told to come alone.

Every family photograph...

An empty space remained where his future wife should have stood.

Victoria even arranged meetings with daughters of billionaires.

Fashion executives.

Tech CEOs.

Political families.

Each dinner ended the same way.

Daniel never returned their calls.

Instead...

He spent weekends helping Emily organize charity book drives for children.

He painted classrooms.

Read bedtime stories at children's hospitals.

And somehow...

He had never been happier.

That only made his parents angrier.

One afternoon...

Sophia decided to investigate Emily herself.

She hired a private investigator.

Three days later...

The report arrived.

Occupation:

Elementary School Teacher.

Salary:

Average.

Mother:

Bookstore owner.

Assets:

Almost nothing visible.

Sophia laughed.

"I told you."

"She's nobody."

But there was one strange note.

CONFIDENTIAL RECORDS UNAVAILABLE.

ACCESS RESTRICTED.

The investigator frowned.

"I've never seen this before."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Probably government paperwork."

"Ignore it."

The investigator wasn't convinced.

He had searched thousands of people.

Nobody...

Absolutely nobody...

Had financial records sealed at this level.

Unless...

Someone had requested extraordinary privacy.

Across town...

Emily finished reading to a classroom full of children.

One little girl hugged her tightly.

"When I grow up..."

"I want to be like you."

Emily smiled warmly.

"You'll become even better."

After school...

A black luxury sedan quietly stopped outside.

The driver stepped out.

"Miss Carter."

"The Chairman is waiting."

Emily sighed.

"I told Grandfather not to send the limousine."

"He insisted."

She climbed inside.

The car disappeared before anyone noticed.

Except...

Sophia.

Who happened to be driving past the school.

Her mouth slowly fell open.

"That's..."

"The Ashford family limousine..."

Impossible.

The Ashfords were among the wealthiest families in America.

Why would they pick up...

A schoolteacher?

Sophia immediately followed the car.

Twenty minutes later...

It entered the private gates of Ashford Manor.

No visitors allowed.

The gates closed.

Sophia stared through the iron bars...

Completely confused.

Inside the mansion...

An elderly gentleman embraced Emily.

"My granddaughter."

"You've hidden long enough."

Emily smiled sadly.

"I wanted someone to love me..."

"Before they knew my last name."

The old man nodded.

"But they have insulted you enough."

He handed her a leather folder.

"The board approved everything."

Emily opened it.

Inside...

Were documents confirming that she had become the majority heir to a global investment empire worth nearly eighteen billion dollars.

Her grandfather smiled.

"They think you're after their fortune."

"They have no idea..."

May you like

"They're comparing a candle..."

"To the sun."
