CHAPTER 6 — The Vault Beneath the Foundation

The golden key haunted Emily's thoughts.

PROPERTY OF CARTER FOUNDATION.

It was impossible.

Her father had officially dissolved the Foundation just weeks before her accident.

Every newspaper had reported the same story.

Every government record confirmed it.

So why did this key exist?

The next morning, despite her doctor's objections, Emily insisted on leaving the hospital under police protection.

Detective Mason drove her to the abandoned Carter Foundation headquarters on the outskirts of the city.

The once-grand building stood empty, its windows covered in dust and vines.

A rusted chain blocked the front entrance.

"It hasn't been opened in seven years," Mason said.

Emily looked down at the key.

"I think it has."

Inside, everything was frozen in time.

Old furniture.

Family portraits.

Stacks of untouched documents.

It was as if everyone had simply walked away.

Then Emily noticed something strange.

One portrait of her father hung slightly crooked.

She straightened it—

Click.

A hidden door slowly slid open behind the wall.

Cold air rushed from the darkness below.

A staircase descended into an underground vault.

Detective Mason drew his weapon.

Together, they walked down.

At the bottom sat a steel door.

Emily inserted the golden key.

The lock opened instantly.

Inside was not money.

Not jewelry.

Not company secrets.

Instead...

Hundreds of neatly organized video tapes, hard drives, and sealed evidence boxes lined the walls.

In the center of the room stood a large monitor.

As soon as the electricity came on, the screen lit up automatically.

A prerecorded video began playing.

Emily gasped.

Her father appeared on the screen.

He looked older... tired... and terrified.

"If you're watching this, Emily," he said, "then I failed to protect you."

Tears streamed down Emily's face.

Her father continued.

"I discovered a secret organization years ago. They infiltrate hospitals, banks, courts, and corporations. They don't steal companies..."

"They steal lives."

"They erase people without anyone asking questions."

"I pretended to shut down the Carter Foundation."

"But in reality, I turned it into a private investigation network dedicated to exposing them."

Emily's heart pounded.

Her father leaned closer to the camera.

"If Daniel betrayed you, he's only a pawn."

"If Richard Holloway disappeared, someone much higher helped him."

Then his expression became deadly serious.

"There is only one person you must never trust..."

The video suddenly cut to black.

Every monitor in the vault went dark.

The emergency lights began flashing red.

A mechanical voice echoed through the underground chamber.

"Unauthorized access detected."

Before Detective Mason could react, the steel door behind them slammed shut.

BOOM!

They were locked inside the vault.

Then smoke slowly began pouring through hidden vents in the ceiling.

Emily looked up in horror.

Someone had activated the vault's self-destruct system.

May you like

And whoever had done it...

Already knew they were there.
