CHAPTER 8 — The Final Video Emily Was Never Meant to See

Emily couldn't breathe.

Every memory...

Every birthday...

Every family photo...

Every moment she had shared with the Carters suddenly felt like a carefully written script.

She looked at William with trembling eyes.

"If Robert wasn't my father..."

"...then who am I?"

William didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the last steel cabinet hidden in the vault.

It required two keys.

He inserted his own.

Then placed Emily's golden key into the second lock.

Click.

The cabinet slowly opened.

Inside rested a single black flash drive labeled:

FOR EMILY — ONLY AFTER SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

William handed it to Detective Mason.

They plugged it into the monitor.

The screen came alive.

A woman appeared.

She looked remarkably like Emily.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Only older.

Emily's knees nearly gave way.

"Mom...?"

The woman smiled through tears.

"If you're watching this, my little girl... then I failed to keep my promise."

Twenty-eight years earlier...

A powerful organization known only as The Circle had targeted Emily's biological family.

Her father had created an encrypted financial network capable of exposing billions of dollars in international corruption.

The Circle couldn't crack his system.

So they stole the only leverage they had.

His newborn daughter.

Emily.

To protect her identity, Robert Carter—a close friend of her biological parents—agreed to raise her as his own.

Only four people knew the truth.

Robert.

William.

Emily's real parents.

...and one traitor.

The woman on the screen wiped away a tear.

"If you ever learn who betrayed us..."

"Run."

"They are never alone."

The video suddenly switched to hidden surveillance footage.

A hospital corridor.

Seven years earlier.

Emily watched in horror as Daniel signed paperwork beside Director Richard Holloway.

Then another person stepped into view.

The camera captured the face clearly.

Detective Mason's expression froze.

"No..."

Emily stared at the screen.

She couldn't believe it.

The person shaking Daniel's hand wasn't Richard.

It wasn't William.

It wasn't anyone from the Carter family.

It was Detective Mason's own father... Police Commissioner Jonathan Mason.

The room fell silent.

Detective Mason slowly backed away from the monitor.

"My father died..."

William looked at him gravely.

"No."

"He staged his death the same year Richard disappeared."

At that exact moment...

Mason's phone vibrated.

One new text message.

Unknown Number.

Only six words appeared on the screen:

"Don't trust William. He's lying too."

Before anyone could react...

A sniper's bullet shattered the vault window.

BANG!

William staggered backward.

Blood spread across his white shirt.

As Emily rushed to catch him, he grabbed her wrist with surprising strength and whispered one final sentence:

"The Circle has already placed one of its members beside you... and you've trusted that person from the very beginning."

His hand fell limp.

The vault echoed with gunfire outside.

Emily looked from William's lifeless body...

...to Detective Mason...

...then back to the anonymous text.

For the first time, she realized one terrifying truth:

May you like

She no longer knew who was telling the truth... or who wanted her dead.
