CHAPTER 1 — The Ultrasound That Changed Everything

Emma Carter had dreamed of this day for months.
At twenty-eight years old, she sat on the examination bed with both hands wrapped protectively around her swollen belly, smiling as the ultrasound machine flickered to life. The room smelled of disinfectant, but all she could imagine was the sweet scent of a newborn baby.
She had already picked a name.
Noah.
The tiny heartbeat echoing through the room sounded like the most beautiful song she'd ever heard.
But suddenly...
The smile disappeared from Dr. Helen Brooks' face.
She stopped moving the ultrasound probe.
Her eyes froze on the monitor.
The cheerful conversation vanished, replaced by a silence so heavy Emma could hear her own breathing.
"Doctor...?"
No answer.
Dr. Brooks swallowed hard before quietly asking a nurse to close the examination room door.
Emma's heart began pounding.
"What is it?" she whispered.
The doctor looked at her with eyes full of sympathy.
"I'm afraid we found something we weren't expecting."
The room spun.
Dr. Brooks pointed toward the screen where strange shadows surrounded the baby.
"The pregnancy has become extremely dangerous. There's a rare complication causing severe internal bleeding. If we don't act soon..."
Emma interrupted, her voice trembling.
"My baby... is he okay?"
The doctor hesitated.
Then came the sentence no mother should ever hear.
"If the condition worsens, we may be forced to choose between saving you... or saving your baby."
Emma's entire body went numb.
Tears streamed silently down her cheeks.
She had waited years to become a mother.
After three heartbreaking miscarriages...
After endless hospital visits...
After praying every single night...
Now fate was asking her to make the impossible choice.
She placed both hands over her belly.
"No matter what happens..."
She whispered through tears.
"My son deserves to live."
Dr. Brooks looked away.
She couldn't tell Emma the whole truth.
Because hidden deep inside the latest scan...
There was another terrifying discovery.
Something that had absolutely nothing to do with the pregnancy.

And if Emma learned the truth now...
It might destroy her before the surgery even began.
