Chapter 11 - The Descent

Derek stood in the center of the cramped studio apartment, the air thick with the smell of stale microwave dinners and damp carpet. The eviction notice from his temporary landlord was taped haphazardly to the inside of the flimsy wooden door, glowing under the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb. His phone, once a lifeline of high-powered executive calls and secretive texts, now sat dead on the cracked laminate counter, its battery drained and its numbers blocked by everyone who had once pretended to care.

Without access to funds, his sleek wardrobe was reduced to a single pair of frayed jeans and a faded hoodie he had bought at a discount store. The absolute reality of his downfall pressed down on him like a physical weight. Every bridge had been intentionally burned, every safety net shredded by his own arrogant hands. He walked over to the small, grimy window and looked down at the rain slicking the pavement below, realizing that the glamorous world of Le Jardin, private booths, and hidden mistresses belonged to a man who no longer existed.
