Chapter 3 - THE WOLF’S CONFESSIONThe silence in the penthouse was so profound that the hum of the climate-control system sounded like a jet engine.

Elena stared at Dante, her chest heaving. The professional barrier—the rigid wall of Mr. Moretti and Miss Parker, of schedules, medication reminders, and corporate compliance—had shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
"Forget I said anything," Elena whispered, turning sharply toward the private elevator. Her fingers hammered frantically against the call button. "Just open the elevator, Dante. Let me walk out of here. Pretend I never came to your apartment."
Before her finger could press the override sensor, a large, warm hand clamped over hers, stopping her movement. Dante gently pulled her hand away from the panel and pinned her wrist lightly against the cool glass of the elevator door.
He didn't trap her with violence; he trapped her with his sheer, overwhelming presence.
"Two years, Elena," Dante said, his voice a low, rough rumble that vibrated straight through her core. "For twenty-four months, every morning at 7:00 AM sharp, my coffee was on my desk—black, exactly two drops of stevia, heated to 160 degrees. Every evening at 8:00 PM, my itinerary was cleared, my files were organized, and you stood by the door with my coat."
"I was your assistant," Elena breathed, her eyes locked onto his.
"No," Dante corrected, his thumb brushing softly over the bruise on her wrist, completely contradicting the lethal danger radiating from his posture. "An assistant is someone you hire. You... you were the axis this entire empire spun around. Do you think I didn't notice how every crisis dissolved the second you walked into the room? Do you think I didn't notice the way you looked at me when you thought I wasn't paying attention?"
Elena’s breath hitched. "You... you knew?"
"I know everything that happens in my perimeter, Elena," Dante said softly, his dark eyes darkening further as he leaned down, his face inches from hers. "And for the past six months, every time I looked at that wedding invitation, every time I sat across from Bianca trying to convince myself that marrying into the Bellini family was a strategic necessity for the syndicate... do you know what I saw?"
Elena shook her head slowly, paralyzed by the raw intensity in his gaze.
"I saw a mistake," Dante murmured. "A slow, agonizing mistake that I didn't know how to stop without plunging the city into an all-out turf war. But you... you stopped it for me."
"I didn't do it for you, Dante," Elena whispered, though her voice lacked any conviction. "I did it for Sophia."
"You did it because you couldn't stand to watch me make a fool of myself, and because you loved me enough to risk your life to save my family," Dante replied, his tone brooking no argument. He reached up, his fingers gently tangling into the soft waves of her hair, tilting her face upward. "And now? Now the wedding is canceled. The alliance is dead. And you are standing in my home, telling me you've been in love with me for two years."
"Dante, please..." A tear finally slipped down Elena’s cheek, catching the amber light of the penthouse. "Your world is a battlefield. Senator Bellini won't just walk away because you canceled a wedding. They're going to come after you, after Sophia... after anyone connected to you."
"Let them come," Dante whispered against her lips. "For two years, I fought to protect an empire built on blood and contracts. Tonight, I fight for something real."
When his lips finally met hers, it wasn't a gentle surrender. It was the collision of two tectonic plates—hungry, desperate, and fierce. Elena gasped into the kiss, her hands finally rising to grip the lapels of his charcoal suit, pulling him closer as the last remnants of her self-control melted away.
Suddenly, a loud, shrill alarm pierced the penthouse.
The red emergency lights along the perimeter of the floor began to flash in a synchronized rhythm.
Dante pulled back instantly, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. He spun around toward the command center console, where a holographic grid of the building’s perimeter was blinking crimson.
"Vance," Dante barked into his wrist communicator. "Report."
Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with static and urgency. "Boss, we’ve got a breach. Sub-level three. They bypassed the biometric scanners using an encrypted Moretti security code. It’s a professional hit squad."
Dante’s face went completely ice-cold. He looked back at Elena, his expression locking into a mask of pure, unadulterated menace.

"Whose code?" Dante asked.
"Senator Bellini’s private black-ops unit," Vance replied. "And Boss... they aren't here for you. They’re heading straight for the east suite. They’re coming for the child."
