Chapter 8 - SHADOWS IN THE PENTHOUSEMidnight settled over Manhattan like a velvet shroud.

Inside the Moretti citadel, the high-security systems hummed with absolute precision. Down the hall, ten-year-old Sophia was fast asleep in her bed, her breathing deep and peaceful for the first time in years, her silver voice recorder clutched safely on her nightstand.
In the sprawling, minimalist living room, the panoramic glass windows reflected the glittering lights of the city below.
Elena stood by the edge of the glass, holding a glass of sparkling water. The emerald-green gown whispered softly against the floor as she shifted her weight.
Footsteps approached from behind, silent and deliberate.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a solid, warm chest. Dante rested his chin gently on her shoulder, his breath warm against her neck.
"You're quiet," Dante murmured.
"Just processing," Elena admitted softly, leaning back into his embrace. "Twenty-four hours ago, I was packing a single suitcase in a cramped Brooklyn apartment, convinced I was running for my life from your fiancée and your security detail."
"And now?"
"Now the Senator is in a federal holding cell, his daughter is disgraced, your empire is secure, and I'm standing in an eighty-story glass fortress with Manhattan’s most feared crime boss." Elena turned slightly in his arms, looking up at him with a skeptical eyebrow raised. "Honestly, Dante? It feels like a fever dream."
Dante’s lips curved into a rare, genuine smile—one that only Elena was ever privileged to see.
"It's not a dream," he said softly, his hands sliding around to cup her face, his thumbs gently brushing her cheekbones. "For two years, I surrounded myself with iron gates, armed guards, and strategic alliances because I thought power was the only thing that kept an empire safe. I was blind."
"Dante..."
"Listen to me, Elena," he interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, unshakeable sincerity. "When you walked out of my office three days ago—when I realized you were willing to risk everything to protect a child who wasn't even yours—I realized what real strength looked like. It wasn't in the guns, or the money, or the contracts."
He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers.
"It was in you."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. All the walls she had built, all the secret yearnings she had buried deep inside her heart for two years, surfaced in a single, overwhelming wave.
"You don't have to be my assistant anymore, Elena," Dante whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Unless... unless you want to be something else entirely."
Before Elena could answer, a soft chime echoed from the main elevator override panel near the entrance of the penthouse.
Dante’s body instantly stiffened. His protective instincts flared back to life. He stepped away from Elena, his hand instinctively dropping toward the holster beneath his jacket.
"Vance," Dante spoke into his comms unit. "Report. Who just bypassed the primary elevator lock?"
Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker, but instead of the usual calm, professional cadence, it sounded strained, breathless, and laced with absolute panic.
"Boss... we didn't override it. The system override didn't come from us."
Dante’s eyes widened in horror. He spun around toward the elevator shaft just as the heavy steel doors slid open with a soft ding.

The elevator car was completely empty.
Except for a single, blood-stained black wedding invitation resting on the floor, surrounded by a ticking digital timer counting down from sixty seconds.
