Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM AUDITDawn broke over Manhattan, washing the skyline in a cold, unforgiving gray light.

Inside the Moretti citadel, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The bullet holes in the east hallway had already been patched by an automated maintenance drone, but the psychological impact of Senator Bellini’s nationwide broadcast hung heavy in the air.
Sophia was finally fast asleep in the master suite under the watchful eye of Dr. Vance, exhausted from the terror of the night.
In the command center, Elena stood over the main holographic table, her fingers dancing across the keys. Rows of financial data, offshore bank routing numbers, and encrypted shell corporation logs cascaded down the screens.
"They moved fast," Elena said, her voice tight with professional focus. "Within thirty minutes of canceling the wedding, Bellini’s legal team filed emergency injunctions freezing all of Sophia’s primary trust accounts, claiming she was 'endangered' by your criminal syndicate."
Dante stood behind her, a fresh black shirt fitted sharply across his broad shoulders. A white bandage was partially visible beneath his collar where the bullet had grazed him. He was nursing a cup of black coffee, his dark eyes fixed on the data streams.
"They think freezing the public accounts will starve us out," Dante said, his voice smooth and cold. "They don't realize public accounts are pocket change."
"It's not just about the money, Dante," Elena said, turning to face him, her expression serious. "Look at this sub-routing code." She tapped a sequence on the screen, bringing up a complex web of international transactions. "Senator Bellini didn't just embezzle from Sophia's trust. He’s been laundering cartel money through the Bellini Holdings conglomerate for the last three years—using your syndicate’s legitimate shipping routes as a cover without your knowledge."
Dante’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "He used my name as a shield for his own syndicate."
"Exactly," Elena nodded. "If federal authorities audit those shipping lanes based on the public warrant he issued against you, they’ll find your name on the manifests—not his. He framed you for his own money laundering operation, and he planned to use Sophia’s disappearance as the final nail in your coffin."
Dante stared at the screen for a long, silent moment. Then, a dark, humorless chuckle escaped his lips.
"Arthur Bellini thinks he’s playing chess," Dante murmured. "He doesn't realize he’s been sitting at a poker table with a loaded gun pointed at his head."
"What do we do?" Elena asked. "If we go to the authorities, Bellini owns half the federal judges in the District Court. We’ll be arrested before we step out of the elevator."
"We don't go to the authorities," Dante said, stepping closer to her until his gaze locked onto hers with absolute, unshakable certainty. "We go to the annual gala tonight."
Elena blinked in disbelief. "The gala? Dante, your arrest warrant is broadcasting across every news channel in the city! Senator Bellini is hosting the Metropolitan Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel tonight with the Mayor, the District Attorney, and every high-society elite in Manhattan. If you walk in there, you’ll be swarmed by federal agents in ten seconds."
"Which is precisely why we are going," Dante said softly, a wolfish grin touching the corner of his mouth. "Arthur Bellini wants a public execution. He wants to destroy my reputation in front of the entire city. I’m going to give him a front-row seat to his own funeral."

He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the edge of Elena’s jawline.
"And you, Elena... you're going to walk in right beside me. As my equal."
