Chapter 12 - The Phantom Ledger

The federal prosecutor’s office called on a rainy Thursday morning with news that proved Ethan Parker truly believed he was untouchable until the very end.

Maya rushed into my office holding an encrypted flash drive. “Claire, the forensic accountants just decrypted a secondary, hidden hard drive they pulled from Ethan’s safety deposit box. You’re not going to believe what he tried to do right before the wedding.”

I gestured for her to continue, my eyes narrowing. “Let me guess. Another shell company?”

“Worse,” Maya said, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. “He set up an offshore cryptocurrency wallet disguised under a phonetic variation of your maiden name. He planned to liquidate the final assets of Parker Urban Works on the night of the wedding, transfer the funds overseas, skip bail, and pin the entire federal conspiracy on you by claiming you were the mastermind behind the corporate shell accounts.”

A cold shiver of absolute rage washed over me, instantly replaced by sharp, calculated clarity. He hadn't just betrayed our marriage; he had plotted to sacrifice me to save his own skin while standing at the altar with another woman.

“Did the prosecutors lock it down?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

“Before he could execute the transfer,” Maya nodded, a triumphant smile breaking across her face. “The account has been completely frozen. And because the fraudulent wallet was registered under your altered maiden name as a supposed ‘liability shield,’ the federal judge has granted an emergency motion to award the entire seized cryptocurrency balance directly to you as primary financial restitution for corporate identity theft.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking at the city skyline outside. Ethan had spent a decade trying to build an empire by stealing my name, my savings, and my trust. In the end, his final, desperate criminal maneuver became the very instrument that legally stripped him of every last hidden penny he possessed.

“File the final asset seizure paperwork with the clerk by noon,” I instructed Maya. “Let’s make sure his prison commissary account is the only thing he has left to manage.”
