Chapter 19 - A Toast to the Past

One year after the wedding day disaster, Bennett-Vance Consolidated hosted an exclusive gala at the Grand Imperial Hotel—the very same ballroom where Ethan’s black card had been declined, setting off the chain reaction that brought his entire criminal enterprise crashing down.

The crystal chandeliers gleamed overhead. Three hundred high-society guests mingled beneath warm gold lights, laughing, networking, and celebrating the city's most successful economic quarter in decades.

Near the grand entrance, Samuel Ortiz—now the Senior Director of Hospitality for all Bennett-Vance luxury properties—coordinated the evening’s events with effortless, flawless precision.

As I walked past the reception bar, Samuel caught my eye and offered a respectful, knowing nod, holding a flute of champagne on a silver tray.

I paused, picked up the flute, and smiled at him.

“Good evening, Ms. Bennett. Everything is running according to schedule,” Samuel said quietly, a faint twinkle of amusement in his eyes.

“I wouldn't expect anything less, Samuel,” I replied softly. “Tell me, do you still keep that card reader handy just in case?”

Samuel chuckled, a rich, genuine sound. “Only for VIPs, Ms. Bennett. Only for VIPs.”

Julian joined us a moment later, sliding his arm lightly around my waist as we looked out over the glittering ballroom.

“You know,” Julian murmured, leaning down slightly so only I could hear. “A lot of people in this room spent last year whispering about how your life was falling apart in this exact room.”

I took a slow sip of my champagne, looking around at the powerful, self-made reality we had constructed from the ashes of betrayal.

“They weren't watching my life fall apart, Julian,” I said, my voice calm, confident, and utterly unshakeable. “They were watching my foundation finally settle.”
