Chapter 6 - Ashes and Diamonds

The flashbulbs outside the federal courthouse were blinding.
Reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers crowded the stone steps, microphones thrust forward like hungry metal beasts. Headlines screamed across every digital screen in the city: “FALL FROM GRACE: Parker Urban Works CEO Arrested for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud,” “Wedding Day Disaster Ends in Handcuffs,” and “The Woman Behind the Empire Speaks.”
I walked down the courthouse steps flanked by Maya and Julian Vance, wearing a tailored charcoal trench coat and dark sunglasses. I didn't stop to answer questions. I didn't need to. The documents filed in federal court spoke volumes louder than any interview ever could.
Ethan had been denied bail. The risk of flight—combined with millions of dollars in hidden offshore funds—made him a primary flight risk. Vanessa Reed had reportedly filed for an emergency annulment citing fraud and abandonment, scrubbing every trace of their disastrous wedding from her social media accounts within twelve hours of the arrest.
As we reached the waiting town car, Julian held the door open for me.
“Well,” Julian said with a faint, respectful smile as I slid into the leather-trimmed interior. “I must admit, watching the mighty Parker fall was a masterclass in strategic execution, Claire.”
“It wasn't a masterclass, Julian,” I replied, looking out the window as the courthouse faded into the distance. “It was simply gravity. What goes up on stolen wings always crashes down.”
Julian climbed in beside me, and the car pulled smoothly into the downtown traffic stream.
“What are your plans for Bennett Civic Strategies now?” Julian asked, turning toward me. “With Parker Urban Works liquidated, there’s a massive void in municipal development consulting. My firm is expanding its urban renewal division, and I can't think of anyone more qualified to lead it than the strategist who built half this city’s infrastructure.”
I turned my head, looking at him thoughtfully. For the first time in over a decade, I didn't feel the crushing weight of someone else’s emergencies dragging me down. I felt light. Free. Unstoppable.

“I don't want to lead your division, Julian,” I said with a slow, confident smile. “I think I’d rather buy out your competitor and run the city myself.”
Julian let out a rich, genuine laugh, shaking his head in sheer admiration. “I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Claire.”
