Chapter 13 - The Skyline Merger

The boardroom at Vance Capital was a cathedral of power. Dark walnut paneling, polished marble floors, and a sweeping view of Lake Michigan framed the long conference table where the most influential developers in the Midwest sat in absolute silence.
Julian Vance stood at the head of the table, holding a sleek, diamond-encrusted fountain pen. He looked around the room before fixing his gaze directly on me.
“For years, this city has watched developers build fragile empires on stolen credit and hollow charisma,” Julian said, his voice echoing cleanly through the room. “Today, we formalize a partnership that sets a new standard for urban redevelopment in Chicago. Bennett-Vance Consolidated is officially born.”
Applause rippled around the table, crisp and genuine. Julian slid the heavy, leather-bound contract across the mahogany surface toward my seat, along with the diamond pen.
I didn't hesitate. I pulled the cap off the pen and signed my name in bold, sweeping strokes across the signature line: Claire Bennett.
It wasn't a hyphenated compromise. It was a statement of absolute sovereignty. I owned fifty percent of the new conglomerate, control of all architectural strategy, and absolute veto power over every municipal contract in the portfolio.
When I set the pen down, Julian raised a crystal tumbler of scotch. “To a partner who actually knows how to read a balance sheet before the ink dries,” he toasted with a warm, approving smile.

“To building structures that don't collapse when the first wind blows,” I replied, clinking my glass against his.
Across the room, investors and executives rushed to congratulate us, but my mind was entirely clear. I hadn't just survived the wreckage of a broken marriage; I had weaponized the lessons of my betrayal to forge an unbreakable corporate dynasty.
