Chapter 20 - The View from the Pinnacle

Midnight settled over Chicago like a velvet cloak woven from millions of glittering lights.

I stood alone on the wraparound balcony of my new downtown penthouse—a soaring architectural masterpiece perched at the very top of the city’s tallest residential tower. The wind whipped softly against the glass, carrying the distant, rhythmic hum of traffic and the steady pulse of a metropolis that never truly slept.

Below me, the skyline stretched out toward the horizon like a vast, glittering circuit board of human ambition. Every bridge, every corporate tower, every revitalized neighborhood block carried the invisible blueprint of my dedication, my intellect, and my uncompromising standards.

My phone buzzed quietly on the glass patio table beside me. I glanced down at the screen. It was an automated security notification from my personal banking app: “All accounts secure. Zero unauthorized activity. Balances fully verified.”

I swiped the notification away, unlocked the screen, and tossed the device onto the lounge chair. I didn't need to check numbers anymore. I didn't need to manage someone else’s crises, cover up someone else’s debts, or apologize for occupying space in a room full of powerful men.

I walked to the edge of the glass railing, rested my hands on the cool steel, and took a deep, steady breath of the crisp night air.

I was Claire Bennett. My accounts were open, my empire was secure, and my future belonged entirely to me.
