Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

One year after the wedding day disaster, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Bennett-Vance Urban Renewal Initiative took place on the very site where Ethan had once shown me an abandoned, pigeon-infested warehouse eleven years earlier.

The old brick walls had been restored to towering, modern luxury apartments. A thriving artisanal coffee shop hummed on the corner, and families walked along the paved sidewalks beneath bright afternoon sunlight.

The mayor of Chicago stood at the podium, cutting a large red ribbon with giant golden scissors, while hundreds of city officials, investors, and community leaders applauded enthusiastically.

Julian Vance stood beside me, handing me a glass of champagne as the cameras flashed.

“To new beginnings,” Julian said, raising his glass toward mine with a warm, knowing smile.

“To foundations built on truth, not sand,” I corrected, clinking my glass against his.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a business email or a project update from Maya. Instead, it was an automated notification from my banking app—a monthly security digest showing my accounts fully secure, properly managed, and untouched by anyone else.

I swiped the notification away, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and turned back to look at the vibrant city skyline stretching out before us.

For the first time in my life, every single brick, every single beam, and every single success was entirely, unequivocally mine.
