Chapter 2 - Shadows Behind the SilkBefore Rashid could hurl another insult, the double glass doors of L’Étoile Royale burst open.

Four men in dark charcoal suits, wearing tactical earpieces and bearing the subtle pins of the Federal Intelligence Bureau, stepped inside. Behind them walked the restaurant owner—a man known to cater only to billionaires and heads of state—sweating profusely, his face pale as chalk.

The entire restaurant was in an uproar. Whispers broke out like wildfire among the high-society patrons.

“Is that… isn’t that Federal Director Vance?” “Why are federal agents in a Michelin-star restaurant?” “Look at the waitress! What is going on?!”

Director Vance walked straight past the trembling restaurant manager, straight past the gaping business partners, and stopped directly in front of Elena. In front of fifty elite diners and the stunned Sheikh, the Director of Federal Intelligence bowed his head respectfully.

“Commander Vance-Cross,” Director Vance said, his voice carrying an unmistakable authority. “The perimeter is secure. The warrant has been signed by the International Criminal Court.”

Commander?

Sheikh Rashid’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. “Commander?! She’s a waitress! She’s a nobody! Look at her clothes!”

Elena slowly reached up to her hair, pulling out the simple black clip. A cascade of dark hair fell over her shoulders. She unpinned the name tag that said ‘Elena’ and tossed it onto Rashid’s dinner plate, right into his spilled water.

“My real name,” she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, “is Dr. Elena Vance-Cross, former Chief Financial Auditor for the International Counter-Terrorism Task Force, currently assigned as Special Operations Director for the Global Anti-Corruption Unit.”

Rashid’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. The name Vance-Cross was a myth in the global financial underworld—a ghost who had brought down two cartel syndicates, dismantled a European banking fraud ring, and exposed corrupt ministers across three continents.

For six months, the authorities had been trying to find where Rashid was hiding his paper trail. They knew he was meeting his shell-company brokers in public places, relying on the cover of noise and high-society arrogance. What he never expected was that the woman clearing his dirty breadcrumbs and refilling his sparkling water was the very auditor who had spent three years building a five-thousand-page dossier on his life.

“You… you set a trap for me,” Rashid whispered, his hands trembling as he tried to slide his hand toward his jacket pocket.

“Don’t touch that phone, Sheikh,” Elena warned, stepping smoothly into his field of movement. “Your assets were frozen four minutes ago. Your private jet at the international airport has just been grounded by air traffic control. And those three gentlemen sitting at your table?”

She looked at the business partners, who were now sweating through their ten-thousand-dollar bespoke suits.

“Their companies were seized by federal marshals ten minutes ago. You aren’t here to buy a port, Rashid. You’re here because you fell for the oldest trick in the book: arrogance.”

“You think you’ve won?” Rashid snarled, his face twisted in venomous fury. “I have army generals on my payroll! I have diplomatic immunity! You are in my city, standing in my playground. My family controls entire news networks. By tomorrow morning, your career will be destroyed, and you’ll be rotting in a dark hole!”

Elena chuckled. It was a dark, cinematic sound that gave everyone in the room goosebumps.

“Diplomatic immunity?” she asked, pulling a red document folder from Director Vance’s hand. “Your home country revoked your diplomatic status two hours ago, Rashid. Your brother, the Crown Prince, signed the extradition decree himself. He was quite cooperative once I showed him the recordings of you planning his assassination.”

Rashid’s face went completely ghostly white. The breath left his lungs in a sharp gasp. “No… no, that’s impossible! He wouldn’t—”

“He did,” Elena snapped, slamming the red folder onto the table. “Take him into custody.”

Two agents stepped forward, grabbing Rashid’s arms and hoisting him out of his chair.

As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, the heavy sound echoed through the silent dining room. The patrons—people who had spent their entire lives worshipping money and power—watched in stunned amazement as the powerful Sheikh was brought to his knees by the woman he had called a foolish girl.

But just as the agents led Rashid toward the door, he stopped. He turned his head, a sinister, crazed smile spreading across his lips.

“You think this is over, Commander?” Rashid cackled softly. “You broke my empire, yes. But you didn’t check the vault in Geneva, did you? You have no idea what is launching in three hours. Enjoy your little victory tonight, Elena… because by tomorrow morning, the entire world’s financial market will collapse, and you will be the one they blame!”
