Chapter 3 - Ghosts from the LedgerThe heavy steel doors of the subterranean bunker hissed shut behind us, sealing us in a concrete room smelling of ozone and sterile cleanliness. In the center of the room sat a single metal interrogation table illuminated by a harsh overhead spotlight.

Victor stumbled out of the van, his flex-cuffed hands gripping the air defensively as he looked around the brutalist, windowless facility. His eyes darted toward the corners of the room where security cameras tracked his every micro-movement.

"What is this place? A black site? You're insane—you're committing treason!" Victor yelled, though his voice lacked its previous venom. It was hollow now, the frantic squawking of a cornered rat.

"Treason requires a government to betray, Victor. You stopped being a citizen the moment you decided human lives were disposable assets," a cold, sharp female voice echoed from the shadows.

A woman stepped into the light. She wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe bun, carrying a thick leather-bound dossier under her arm.

Victor gasped, stumbling backward until his legs hit the edge of the metal table. "Director Vance? What... what are you doing here? You're with the National Security Agency. This... this is illegal!"

Director Elena Vance—one of the highest-ranking directors within the clandestine operations division, a woman who answered only to the President and the Joint Chiefs—stopped two paces away from him. She looked at Victor the way a scientist looks at a particularly repulsive specimen under a microscope.

"Illegal, Mr. Hale?" Vance raised an eyebrow, opening the dossier with a crisp slap of leather. "Let’s talk about illegal. For the past five years, Hale Industries has been running a high-tech smuggling ring, funneling restricted quantum computing components to hostile foreign states. You used shell companies to launder millions in cartel money. And on top of all that, your personal drive contains footage of financial extortion, corporate espionage, and domestic abuse that would make a cartel boss blush."

Victor stared at her, then whipped his head around to look at me, absolute betrayal written across his face. "You... you coordinated with the NSA? You set this up before you even came to the factory?"

"Do you really think a man like me walks into a predator's den without bringing a cage?" I replied, leaning against the concrete wall and crossing my arms. "When I found out what you did to Emily, I didn't just grab my gear. I called Elena. I gave her the decryption keys to your personal servers. Your empire didn't fall because of luck, Victor. It fell because you thought your crimes were too big to fail."

Vance slammed the dossier shut, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the silent room. "Here is how this is going to work, Mr. Hale. You can spend the next forty years rotting in a maximum-security military prison where your name, your wealth, and your expensive lawyers won't mean a damn thing. Or, you can sign a full confession detailing every single associate, corrupt politician, and dirty cop on your payroll."

Victor let out a hysterical, manic laugh, his shoulders shaking. "You think I'm going to sign? You think I'll give you everything? Even if I'm ruined, my friends won't let you bury me! People in very high places owe me favors. Powerful men who will crush you both before the sun comes up!"

I pushed off the wall and walked slowly toward him, stopping just inches away. The air between us grew thick, heavy with an oppressive, suffocating weight.

"Name one," I whispered, staring straight into his panicked eyes.

Victor opened his mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, the heavy steel door of the bunker flew open with a deafening crash.

A frantic junior operative rushed in, holding a bleeding tablet, his face stark white.

"Director Vance! Sir! We have a catastrophic breach!" the operative shouted, panting heavily. "The secure transmission we intercepted from Victor's primary backup server... it wasn't just corporate data. It's a dead-man's switch. And it just went live."
