Chapter 4 - The Dead-Man's SwitchThe silence in the bunker instantly turned freezing.

Director Vance snatched the bleeding tablet from the operative's hands, her eyes scanning the scrolling lines of code and rapid status updates. All the color instantly drained from her face—a rare, terrifying sight for a woman who had overseen global intelligence crises.
"What is it, Elena?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave as I stepped closer to her.
"It’s not just a dead-man's switch," Vance said, her voice tight with disbelief. "It's a synchronized payload. Victor didn't just protect himself from law enforcement... he set up a weaponized insurance policy against his own allies."
Victor stopped laughing. The hysterical grin melted off his face, replaced by a sudden, creeping horror that was entirely different from the fear he felt moments ago. He looked at the tablet, then back at the operative, his eyes wide.
"No..." Victor muttered, shaking his head frantically. "No, that's impossible. That server was encrypted with multi-tier biometric security. It shouldn't trigger unless my heart stopped completely!"
"It didn't trigger because your heart stopped," Vance snapped, thrusting the tablet into my hands. "It triggered because your primary security protocol was breached when Daniel's team raided your data center in the city. The moment our firewall bypassed your administrative controls, the system registered an hostile intrusion and automatically uploaded your entire blackmail vault onto the public dark web—and concurrently transmitted it to every major news network on Earth."
I looked down at the tablet screen. The progress bar for a global data dump was flashing red: 98%... 99%... UPLOAD COMPLETE.
"My God," I murmured.
On the screen, headlines from international wire services were already breaking: TECH BILLIONAIRE VICTOR HALE IMPLICATED IN GLOBAL ESPIONAGE, CORRUPTION, AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BLACKMAIL SYNDICATE. Attached to the articles were unredacted documents, bank statements, audio recordings of corrupt senators, and encrypted video logs.
"You fool!" Vance turned on Victor with absolute fury, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "You've just blown open half the intelligence assets and political corruption rings in the Western hemisphere! Do you have any idea what you've unleashed?"
Victor slumped against the table, his knees buckling beneath him as the full magnitude of what he had accidentally triggered crashed down on his shoulders. He wasn't just facing prison anymore. He had exposed powerful, shadow-dwelling men who operated above the law—men who didn't use courts or lawyers to silence loose ends. They used bullets, car bombs, and quiet disappearances.
"I... I didn't mean to," Victor whimpered, his arrogance entirely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, shaking shell of a man. "It was supposed to be a deterrent... just a safeguard against my own board members!"
"A safeguard?" I grabbed him by the shoulders, hauling him up until his face was inches from mine, the suppressed rage of a brother finally breaking through my military discipline. "You just painted a target on your own back, and on everyone connected to you. But more importantly... you think this saves you?"
Before Victor could answer, the security lights in the bunker flickered violently, then died completely.

The low, heavy hum of the facility's generators cut out, replaced a fraction of a second later by the screaming wail of the emergency klaxons flashing blinding red across the concrete walls.
From the hallway outside, the unmistakable, terrifying sound of automatic gunfire echoed through the bunker.
