Chapter 7 - The Shadow CouncilThe rain outside had turned into a relentless, blinding storm, casting long, bruised shadows across the perimeter of the abandoned airfield where our extraction chopper was supposed to land.

We had abandoned the underground bunker moments before the military strike team arrived to turn it into a smoking crater. Now, packed tightly inside a nondescript armored transport van, our small group hurtled down an unpaved logging road cutting through the dense pine forests north of the city.

In the passenger seat, Director Vance was frantically tapping commands into her encrypted laptop, her face illuminated by the harsh blue glow of the screen.

"The narrative is spinning out of control," Vance said without looking up, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "The shadow council—the directorate behind Victor—has already activated their media assets. They aren't trying to deny the leaks anymore. They're framing us as rogue military elements who staged a terrorist cyber-attack against national security infrastructure."

In the back of the van, Victor sat huddled in the corner, wrapped in a thermal blanket, staring blankly at the metal floor. The billionaire who once owned skyscrapers and politicians was now shivering like a stray dog, completely broken by the reality that his masters viewed him as nothing more than a disposable tool.

I sat across from him, cleaning the carbon buildup from my sidearm with a piece of oily cloth, my movements methodical and calm.

"They're going to kill me, aren't they?" Victor whispered, his voice trembling so hard his teeth chattered. "Even if we get out of this country... the people I worked for... they don't leave loose ends. They own the borders, the airports, the passports."

"They own a lot of things, Victor," I said without looking up from my weapon. "But they don't own the clock. And right now, every minute they spend trying to hunt us down is another minute our allies are using to secure the remaining evidence."

Suddenly, the van shuddered violently as a heavy projectile slammed into the rear armor, followed a split second later by the ear-splitting crack of a high-powered sniper rifle.

CRACK! BANG!

"Ambush! Left flank!" Miller yelled from the driver's seat, instantly slamming his foot down on the accelerator and spinning the steering wheel hard to throw off the shooter's aim.

Through the bulletproof rear window, two sleek black SUVs emerged from the dense tree line behind us, their high-beam headlights cutting blinding shafts through the pouring rain. Mounted on the roof of the lead SUV was a heavy caliber anti-materiel rifle, its barrel tracking our van with terrifying precision.

"They found us!" Vance shouted, slamming her laptop shut. "How? We scrubbed all our digital signatures!"

"They didn't track our comms," I said, sliding the slide of my pistol forward with a sharp click and checking the magazine. "They tracked Victor's expensive Swiss watch. I told him to leave it in the bunker."

Victor whimpered, clutching his wrist where the expensive gold timepiece had already been discarded. "I forgot! I'm sorry!"

"Save your apologies for someone who cares," I said, kicking open the side cargo door of the van as the wind and rain roared into the cabin.

"Captain, what the hell are you doing?" Miller yelled over the roar of the engine.

"Buying us time," I replied.

Before anyone could stop me, I grabbed a smoke grenade and a breaching charge from the floor, pulled the pin, and tossed them through the open rear doors directly into the path of the oncoming SUV.

The grenade detonated in a blinding wall of thick, white chemical smoke, completely obscuring the lead vehicle's windshield. Blinded at eighty miles per hour, the SUV veered violently to the left, crashing hard into a massive oak tree at the edge of the road with a sickening crunch of metal and shattering glass.

The second SUV swerved sharply to avoid the wreckage, sliding sideways across the muddy gravel road before coming to a violent stop.

"Keep driving, Miller!" I shouted, pulling myself back inside and slamming the cargo door shut. "Don't stop for anything until we reach the extraction point!"
