Chapter 5 - The Siege from the Shadows"Breach! Sector Four compromised!" an automated voice blared across the bunker's intercom system.

The heavy steel doors shuddered under the violent impact of heavy ordinance. Sparks showered down from the ceiling as someone on the other side began cutting through the electronic locking mechanism with an industrial-grade plasma torch.

"They're here," Director Vance said, her hand instantly dropping to the tactical holster at her waist, drawing her sidearm with practiced precision. She looked at me, her eyes dead serious. "Victor's dead-man's switch didn't just alert the media. It alerted the Shadow Syndicate. The people who funded his operations, the ones even the government pretends don't exist. They're here to sanitize the site—and that means leaving no survivors."

I didn't hesitate. Years of combat muscle memory took over, overriding any shock or hesitation. "Miller! Take two men and hold the secondary corridor. Set up a crossfire at the primary junction. Don't let them breach the inner sanctum!"

"On it, Captain!" Sergeant Miller barked, motioning to two heavy-weapons specialists who instantly unslowed their carbines and sprinted toward the doorway.

I turned back to Victor, who was cowering under the steel table, clutching his head and sobbing uncontrollably.

"Get up," I ordered, grabbing him by the back of his jacket and hauling him to his feet.

"I don't want to die! Please, don't let them kill me!" Victor wailed, his expensive clothes stained with dust and sweat.

"You should have thought of that before you decided to play god with my family," I said coldly, shoving him behind a reinforced concrete pillar next to Vance.

BOOM!

The heavy steel entrance doors blew inward, shredded by a synchronized breaching charge. A thick cloud of white smoke and blinding flashbangs instantly flooded the hallway, followed immediately by the staccato roar of suppressed automatic weapons fire.

"Contact! Multiple hostiles wearing unmarked black tactical gear!" Miller's voice crackled over our tactical comms, punctuated by the loud, rhythmic thud of return fire from our positions. "They're pushing hard! They have armor-piercing rounds—our barricade won't hold long!"

I unholstered my Sig Sauer P320 and pulled the charging slide back, the sharp metallic clack snapping into my ears like a tuning fork. I stepped into the doorway, taking a tactical stance just as one of Miller’s men was thrown backward into the room, his armor smoking from a direct hit.

"Fall back to the inner core!" I yelled over the din of battle, raising my weapon and squeezing the trigger three times in rapid succession down the smoky hallway.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

A shadow in black tactical gear crumpled instantly, collapsing onto the concrete. But two more immediately took his place, stepping over their fallen comrade with cold, mechanical efficiency, their rifle barrels sweeping the room.

We were outgunned, outmanned, and trapped deep underground. And the people hunting us weren't ordinary criminals—they were professional black-ops assassins sent to erase every living trace of Victor Hale's empire.
