Chapter 2 - SECRETS BENEATH THE TILES

The Legacy of Elizabeth VanceThe morning sun broke through the rain clouds, casting long, pale beams through the greasy glass of the diner. Maya stood alone in the center of the dining floor, holding a heavy ring of brass keys. Just eight hours ago, she had been wiping down tables for minimum wage. Now, she was officially the General Manager of Vance Diner #01.
Arthur Vance had left at dawn, promising to return later that afternoon with legal documents and corporate representatives to finalize her contracts. He had given her full authority to inspect the premises and handle the transition.
"First order of business," Maya muttered to herself, looking down at the small USB drive she had secretly detached from the silver key the night before.
She walked into the manager's office—a tiny, windowless room hidden behind the kitchen storage area. The room smelled of old cigar smoke and stale cologne, distinctly Barnes. Stacks of unchecked inventory sheets and unpaid bills littered the mahogany desk.
Maya sat down, booted up the central computer, and inserted the mysterious USB drive.
A single encrypted folder appeared on the screen, labeled "PROJECT PHENIX."
When she clicked on it, a password prompt appeared. She tried Barnes' birthday, the diner's store number, and Arthur's name, but every attempt failed. On her fourth try, a red warning box flashed:
WARNING: ONE ATTEMPT REMAINING. INCORRECT ENTRY WILL INITIATE LOCAL DATA WIPING.
Maya withdrew her hand from the keyboard, her chest heaving. Whatever was on this drive, someone had gone to extreme lengths to protect it.
The Hidden VaultDeciding to leave the computer for now, Maya began exploring the manager's office to find physical records. She noticed something odd about the layout of the back wall. The wood paneling near the filing cabinet looked newer than the rest of the room.
She pushed the heavy metal filing cabinet aside. The floorboards beneath it squeaked loudly.
Beneath the dust, Maya spotted a brass latch built directly into the floor. Heart pounding, she pulled the latch. A heavy trapdoor lifted, revealing a steep flight of wooden stairs descending into pitch darkness.
Using her flashlight, Maya crept down the steps. The cold air smelled of damp concrete and copper. At the bottom of the stairs sat a small underground room, roughly the size of a shipping container.
It wasn't a standard storage basement.
The walls were lined with rows of steel filing cabinets and high-end surveillance equipment. Multiple screens displayed live, high-definition video feeds—not just of the diner, but of several surrounding businesses, residential streets, and even the local police precinct.
"What is this place?" Maya whispered in horror.
On the central table lay a leather-bound journal with gold embossing. Maya opened it. The handwriting inside was elegant and precise—the unmistakable penmanship of Elizabeth Ann Vance.
Maya flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning the dates. The journal entries dated back nearly thirty years.
"October 14th: The network is expanding. They believe I am merely building a chain of humble roadside diners to honor my past. They have no idea that every Vance Diner is strategically positioned over the city's key communication junctions. We are capturing everything."
The Threat ReturnsMaya’s breath caught in her throat. Elizabeth Vance hadn't built a restaurant empire; she had created a massive, private intelligence network disguised as comfort food joints.
Suddenly, Maya heard heavy footsteps echoing from the floor above.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Someone was walking around inside the manager's office.
Maya instantly switched off her flashlight and pressed her back against the damp cold concrete wall of the hidden vault. Through the crack in the trapdoor above, a dark figure descended the stairs.
It wasn't Arthur Vance.
It was a tall, lean man wearing a custom charcoal suit. His face was cold, almost predatory, featuring a jagged scar that ran from his left ear down to his collar. Behind him stepped two muscular men in tactical gear.
"Search the room," the man in the suit commanded softly. "Barnes failed us, but the data must be here. If the girl found it, eliminate her immediately."
Maya squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her hand over her mouth to muffle her terrified gasps. Her phone began to vibrate violently in her pocket.

It was an incoming call from her brother's nurse at the hospital.
CLIFFHANGER / HOOK: The high-pitched buzzing of the phone rang out like a alarm bell in the small, enclosed vault. The scar-faced man instantly turned his head toward Maya’s hiding spot, drawing a suppressed pistol from inside his jacket. "Found you," he whispered.
