Chapter 5 - THE PHENIX PROTOCOL

DARKNESS AND CHAOSThe moment Maya clicked the top of the silver pen twice, an invisible shockwave of electromagnetic energy rippled through the warehouse.

Instantly, the high-powered halogen floodlights hanging overhead exploded in a shower of sparks, plunging the facility into pitch blackness. The digital scopes on the mercenaries' rifles flickered and died. The electronic locks securing the exit doors clicked open as their backup generators fried.

"What happened?!" Marcus screamed in the dark, his smooth demeanor completely shattering. "Get the backup lights on! Kill them!"

Muffled gunshots echoed blindly through the dark, the muzzle flashes briefly illuminating the chaos like a terrifying strobe light.

Maya didn't waste a millisecond. She threw her body onto the cold floor, crawling rapidly toward the sound of her brother's stifled cries.

"Leo! Stay down!" she shouted over the ringing deafening sound of gunfire.

She reached the chair, her fingers frantically working against the heavy zip-ties binding his wrists. Pulling a small pocket knife from her coat, she sliced through the plastic straps just as a mercenary's flashlight beam swept across her face.

"Over here!" the mercenary yelled.

Before the guard could raise his weapon, a heavy flashbang grenade clattered across the concrete floor, detonating directly between the guard and Maya.

A blinding wall of white light and a 130-decibel shockwave blew the mercenary off his feet.

Through the smoke, Arthur Vance appeared, clad in a tactical vest, wielding a silenced carbine. Behind him, three elite security operators swept through the room with methodical precision, neutralizing Marcus’s men one by one in the dark.

"Maya! Get the boy out of here!" Arthur roared, dropping to one knee to provide suppressive fire toward the far side of the warehouse where Marcus was retreating.

"Come on, Leo!" Maya grabbed her brother, hoisting his light frame into her arms, and sprinted toward the side emergency exit.

THE SECRET IN THE BASEMENTThey burst through the heavy steel emergency doors, expecting to find the alleyway. Instead, they found themselves in a long, sterile corridor lined with reinforced glass windows—the main research wing of the old Vance Bio-Tech facility.

"Maya... where are we?" Leo whimpered, holding onto her neck, his breathing heavy and raspy.

"We're safe, buddy. We're getting out," Maya lied, her heart sinking as she realized the exit had been bricked off years ago. They were trapped in a dead-end corridor.

Suddenly, a heavy steel blast door at the end of the hallway slammed shut, locked by a manual mechanical crank from the outside.

Through the thick bulletproof glass wall adjacent to them, Marcus appeared. His face was covered in soot, his expensive suit ruined, and his eyes wild with unhinged fury.

He held a manual control box wired directly into the room's ventilation system.

"You thought you were so clever with your little EMP device, didn't you?" Marcus sneered through the intercom speaker on the wall. "You destroyed my tablet, but it doesn't matter. The phenix protocol was already initiated the moment the drive was read!"

Maya pressed her back against the glass, shielding Leo behind her. "What are you talking about?"

"Look above you, Miss Lin," Marcus cackled.

Maya looked up. Large glass vats mounted near the ceiling were beginning to hiss. A pale, purple-tinted gas was slowly swirling inside the glass pipes, venting directly into the hallway where she and Leo were trapped.

"The very toxin that killed your mother," Marcus whispered into the intercom. "Pure, concentrated Phenix Gas. In three minutes, your lungs will collapse, just like hers did. And there is no cure in the world that can save you."

A MOTHER'S SACRIFICELeo began coughing violently, his tiny hands clutching at his throat as the faint purple mist began to seep through the upper air vents.

"Maya... it hurts," Leo gasped, his skin turning pale. "I can't breathe..."

"No, no, no!" Maya screamed, pounding her fists against the bulletproof glass until her knuckles bled. "Marcus, stop! Take me! Just let him out! He's just a child!"

Marcus simply laughed, turning his back on them to walk toward a waiting helicopter on the pad outside. "Die like your mother, Maya. In obscurity."

Desperate, Maya looked around the sterile corridor. At the far end of the hallway stood an old brass plaque mounted beside a sealed vault door. It read:

ELENA LIN MEMORIAL CLEANROOM - RESTRICTED ACCESS.

Maya ran to the vault door. It required a physical key—a six-pinned tumbler lock that had survived the EMP blast.

She looked down at her hands. She still had the original silver key that Arthur Vance had given her in the diner—the key that Elizabeth Vance had given her son.

“My mother opened this diner because someone fed her when she had nothing...” Arthur’s words echoed in her mind.

Was it just a diner key? Or was it the master override for the entire Vance infrastructure?

Maya jammed the silver key into the cleanroom lock. It fit perfectly, but when she tried to turn it, it stuck halfway.

The purple gas was descending now, heavy and dense, filling the corridor like a toxic fog. Leo fell to his knees, gasping for air, his consciousness fading fast.

"Please..." Maya sobbed, putting all her weight against the key. "Please, Mom... help me!"

CLIFFHANGER / HOOK: With a sharp CLICK, the lock turned—but instead of opening the door, a hidden compartment in the wall popped open, revealing a hidden video screen that automatically turned on. On the screen was a recorded video message from Maya’s late mother, Elena Lin—and her first words made Maya’s blood run completely cold: "Maya, if you are watching this, it means Arthur Vance has betrayed you..."
