Chapter 6 - THE TWISTED WEB

THE TRUTH UNVEILEDThe static on the small monitor cleared, revealing the face of Dr. Elena Lin, recorded five years before her death. She looked tired, with deep dark circles beneath her eyes, but her expression was sharp and urgent.
"Maya, my brave little girl," Elena’s recorded voice spoke through the hidden speaker. "If you have unlocked this terminal, it means Marcus has activated the Phenix Protocol. But you must understand the truth before it is too late. Marcus is not the mastermind. He is merely an enforcer."
Maya stood frozen, her hand still gripping the silver key, as the purple gas continued to pour into the top of the corridor.
"The true architect of the Phenix weapon was not me, and it was not Elizabeth Vance," Elena continued, her eyes fixed on the camera. "It was Arthur Vance."
Maya gasped, dropping to her knees beside Leo, holding him tightly against her chest. "No... that's impossible..."
"Arthur sought to monetize the research from the very beginning," Elena’s voice rasped from the recording. "When his mother, Elizabeth, found out he was planning to sell the chemical agent to private military contractors, she tried to stop him. Arthur poisoned his own mother to take control of Vance Hospitality, and when I refused to give him the override codes, he had Marcus target me and your baby brother. Arthur was the one who ordered the hit. He used Marcus as a scapegoat to play the grieving, heroic heir!"
The screen flickered and died as the master power grid finally succumbed to the EMP damage.
Maya sat in the dimly lit corridor, her mind spinning out of control.
Every single event of the past twenty-four hours rewound in her mind like a nightmare: Arthur appearing at the diner just as Marcus’s men arrived... Arthur having an EMP device ready in his pocket... Arthur driving her straight to this facility...
It wasn't a rescue operation. It was a setup. Arthur had used her to retrieve the encrypted USB drive because only a Lin family biometric pattern could unlock the final Phenix manufacturing schematics!
THE MASK FALLSThe heavy steel blast doors at the end of the corridor suddenly hissed and slid open.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the smoke of battle, was Arthur Vance.
He was no longer holding a weapon. He was wearing a custom-tailored dark suit, holding a silver briefcase in one hand and a remote control in the other. Behind him stood six heavily armed private contractors—not Marcus's men, but Arthur's elite personal guard.
"I see you found your mother's final message, Maya," Arthur said softly, his voice devoid of any of the warmth or empathy he had displayed at the diner.
"You..." Maya whispered, her eyes filled with pure hatred. "You killed your own mother. You killed mine. You made Leo sick!"
Arthur sighed, taking a step into the corridor and pressing a button on his remote. The overhead vents immediately reversed, sucking the purple Phenix gas back out of the room and pumping in fresh air.
Leo began to cough violently, drawing in deep gulps of clean oxygen, his color slowly returning.
"It was never personal, Maya," Arthur explained, stepping over the debris on the floor. "My mother was a foolish idealist. She wanted to use billions of dollars in corporate assets to feed the homeless and build community centers. What a catastrophic waste of capital! With the Phenix network, I can control global markets, eliminate economic rivals, and dictate the political landscape of entire nations."
"And what about me?" Maya spat, standing up and placing herself between Arthur and her brother. "Why play that sick game at the diner last night?"
"Because your mother was smart," Arthur admitted, pointing at the silver key in her hand. "She locked the master control files behind an encryption key that required two things: the silver key Elizabeth gave me, and the unique neural signature of a Lin descendant. I needed you to feel safe. I needed you to trust me so you would voluntarily bring the key and access the vault for me."
He held out his hand, palm up.
"Give me the key, Maya. And I will allow you and your brother to live out the rest of your short lives comfortably on a private island. Refuse... and I will let the gas back in."
AN UNLIKELY ALLIANCEMaya looked at Arthur, then down at her shivering little brother, and finally at the silver key in her hand.
She slowly reached out, extending the key toward Arthur.
"Smart girl," Arthur sneered, stepping forward to grab it.
Just as Arthur’s fingers touched the metal, a deafening explosion shattered the bulletproof glass wall to their right!
A wall of fire and glass rained down on Arthur’s guards. Through the smoke strode Marcus, covered in blood, holding a heavy grenade launcher.
"Did you really think you could double-cross me, Arthur?!" Marcus roared, firing another round directly into the ceiling supports above Arthur’s guards.
"Kill him!" Arthur shrieked, dropping his smooth demeanor and diving behind a concrete pillar.
The hallway erupted into absolute war as Arthur’s elite guards opened fire on Marcus and his remaining mercenaries.

In the blind chaos of crossfire, explosion, and smoke, Maya grabbed Leo by the waist, ripped the silver key back into her pocket, and dived through the shattered glass wall into the lower basement levels of the facility!
CLIFFHANGER / HOOK: As Maya and Leo hit the lower basement floor, she realized they weren't alone. Standing in the shadows of the subterranean lab was a figure in a white lab coat—a woman who slowly turned around, revealing a face Maya hadn't seen in five years: "Mom?" Maya gasped.
