Chapter 3 - THE COLD REALITY

A Heart-Pounding EscapeThe sound of the vibrating phone echoed off the concrete walls like a thunderclap.
"Over there!" the scar-faced man barked, gesturing toward the shadowed alcove where Maya was cowering.
Instinct took over. Maya didn't wait for them to reach her. She grabbed the heavy leather-bound journal off the desk and hurled it with all her strength at the lead gunman. It struck him directly in the face, knocking him off balance.
Without looking back, Maya darted through the gap between the tactical guards, using her small size to slide beneath an outstretched arm. She scrambled up the steep wooden stairs, her fingernails digging into the splinters of the steps.
"Get her!" a voice bellowed from below.
Maya hit the floor of the manager's office, kicked the trapdoor shut with her heavy work boot, and dragged the heavy metal filing cabinet back over it. A loud BANG rattled the wood as the men below tried to kick the door open.
She snatched the USB drive from the computer, bolted out of the office, and sprinted into the main dining room.
The diner was empty, save for one person: Arthur Vance, who had just stepped through the front entrance holding a stack of legal documents.
"Maya? What's going on?" Arthur asked, alarmed by her terrified appearance and breathless state.
"We have to go! NOW!" she screamed, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward the front exit.
Before Arthur could process her words, the glass window of the back kitchen door shattered into a thousand pieces. The two tactical guards burst into the dining area, guns raised.
"Down!" Arthur yelled, reacting with surprising quickness. He tackled Maya behind the main serving counter just as a hail of silenced bullets tore through the vinyl booths and glass display cases.
High StakesPopcorn ceiling dust and shattered glass rained down on them. Maya squeezed her eyes shut, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest.
"Who are these people?!" Arthur hissed, pulling a small silver device from his pocket and pressing a red panic button on its side. "My security team should be outside!"
"They're after the data!" Maya shouted back over the sound of gunfire. "Your mother's secrets! The diner isn't just a diner, Arthur! It’s a surveillance hub!"
Arthur’s face turned deathly pale. "How... how do you know about that?"
Before Maya could reply, the firing stopped. The heavy footsteps of the scar-faced man approached the counter.
"Arthur Vance," the man’s smooth voice echoed through the destroyed room. "How tragic it would be if the sole heir to the Vance fortune died in the exact same manner as his beloved mother. A senseless robbery gone wrong."
"Marcus," Arthur said, his voice cold and filled with recognition. "I should have known you were behind Barnes' sudden change in behavior."
"Your mother was a visionary, Arthur," Marcus replied, taking another step forward. "She built a network capable of influencing elections, controlling markets, and bringing corporate giants to their knees. But she was weak. She wanted to use it to 'protect' people. What a waste of immense power."
The Betrayal WithinMarcus stepped around the counter, pointing his weapon directly at Arthur's head. Maya shrank back, her pulse racing.
"Where is the master key, Arthur?" Marcus demanded. "Give it to me, and I might let the girl live to take care of her sick little brother. Yes, Maya... we know all about little Leo. We know which hospital he's in. We know which room."
Maya felt as though the air had been sucked from her lungs. They knew about Leo.
"Don't touch him!" Maya screamed, pure instinct driving her to stand up between Marcus and Arthur. "I have the key! I have the drive!"
She pulled the silver key and the USB stick from her pocket, holding them out in her shaking hand.
Marcus smiled, a cold, empty expression. "Smart girl."
He reached out to take them, but before his fingers could touch the key, the front doors of the diner were kicked off their hinges with an explosive force. Tactical officers in black uniforms swept into the building, flashbang grenades detonating with blinding light and deafening booms.
In the chaos, Arthur grabbed Maya's hand and pulled her through the kitchen's rear service door, sprinting into the alleyway where a reinforced black sedan was waiting, engine roaring.
They dived into the backseat just as the car accelerated wildly down the wet asphalt, leaving the sounds of gunfire behind.
Maya leaned against the leather seats, trembling uncontrollably. She looked at Arthur, expecting relief on his face. Instead, he looked deeply troubled, staring at the silver key in her hand.
"Maya," Arthur said softly, his voice shaking. "The drive you're holding... it doesn't just contain my mother's surveillance data."
"What else is on it?" she asked.
May you like
"The location of the biological agent that killed her," Arthur revealed, looking straight into her eyes. "And the proof that your mother didn't die of natural causes either. They were killed by the exact same weapon."
CLIFFHANGER / HOOK: As Maya stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief, her phone chimed with a text message from an unknown number. It was a photo of her brother’s hospital room—showing an empty bed with the sheets torn off, and a note written in lipstick on the mirror: "EXCHANGE THE DRIVE BY MIDNIGHT, OR HE STOPS BREATHING."
