Chapter 16 - Victoria's Reckoning

While the men who tried to break us were behind bars, Victoria Hayes refused to accept her reality. Reduced to working as a clerk in a mid-tier department store, her bitterness had metastasized into absolute insanity.

Three days later, during a charity polo match hosted by the Vance Foundation, Victoria managed to slip past the outer security perimeter disguised as a catering staff member.

I was sitting in the VIP pavilion, watching Hazel ride a small pony along the edge of the field under the watchful eye of three armed bodyguards. Victoria approached from behind, a vial of industrial bleach hidden inside her apron pocket, her eyes wide and bloodshot.

"You took everything from me!" Victoria hissed, lunging forward toward my table.

Before she could step within five feet of me, a hand like an iron vise clamped down on her wrist.

It was Arthur Vance's head of security. He twisted her arm behind her back, dropping the vial onto the grass where it shattered safely away from anyone.

"Victoria Hayes," I said, standing up and smoothing my dress, looking down at her writhing on the ground. "You spent months terrifying my daughter because you thought no one would ever hold you accountable. Now, you'll spend the next three years answering to a state judge for attempted assault."
