Chapter 5 - The Frame-Up Exposed

The silence in the room became absolute. On the screen, the high-definition footage played on a continuous loop: Vincent Bellini’s aging, wrinkled hands slipping the vial of nightshade extract into the pocket of Hannah’s fresh housekeeper uniform.

Hannah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as the horrifying realization washed over her. "I... I didn't put that there! I swear to God, I never touched that bottle!"

"I know you didn't, Hannah," Adrian said without taking his eyes off the butler.

Sal stared at the screen, his mouth slightly open, realizing with sudden, stomach-churning clarity that he had been used as a pawn in Vincent’s elaborate coup.

"Vincent," Adrian’s voice was a lethal purr. "Forty years of loyal service. You watched my father die. You held me when I was a child. You knew every secret of this estate. And yet, you decided that a geriatric retirement wasn't enough—you wanted the entire Moretti empire."

Vincent slowly stopped folding his linen cloth. The gentle, grandfatherly facade melted away completely, replaced by a mask of cold, unyielding malice. The slight stoop in his shoulders vanished; he stood straight, his eyes burning with decades of suppressed resentment.

"You became weak, Adrian," Vincent spat, his voice losing its warm tremor and turning into a sharp, bitter hiss. "You started showing mercy. You spared the rival families in Brooklyn instead of wiping them out. You let women and children live in properties meant for business. A Moretti who hesitates is a dead Moretti. I simply accelerated the inevitable."

"And framing a defenseless mother and her four-year-old child?" Adrian’s voice dropped to a dangerous register. "Planting the poison in her apron so the council would blame her if I died?"

"Collateral damage," Vincent replied coldly, his hand sliding slowly toward the silver serving tray.

Before Vincent's fingers could reach the hidden compartment beneath the tray, Adrian’s gun barked. A deafening crack echoed through the luxury suite.

Vincent let out a sharp gasp as a bullet cleanly pierced his right shoulder, spinning him around and sending the silver tray crashing to the marble floor. Crystal shards and a hidden micro-detonator scattered across the ground.

Sal’s bodyguards lunged forward, pinning the bleeding butler to the floor with brutal efficiency.

"Bind him," Adrian ordered coldly, holstering his weapon. "Take him to the lower basement vault. Let him think about his retirement plan while I decide how to take him apart piece by piece."

As the guards hauled the screaming, unrepentant butler out of the room, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.

The room fell quiet again, save for the soft, innocent sound of Ellie humming a nursery rhyme while continuing her imaginary tea party with Rosie the rabbit.

Adrian exhaled slowly, running a hand over his face. The adrenaline was fading, leaving a dull, throbbing ache in his chest. He turned his attention back to Hannah, who was trembling violently against the wall, her eyes wide with shock and terror.

"You're safe now," Adrian said quietly, his voice softening just a fraction.

"Safe?" Hannah let out a bitter, hysterical laugh, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "You have armed guards, dead bodies in the hallway, and assassins in your kitchen! My daughter and I are trapped in a literal cage with a mafia boss! How is that safe?"

Adrian stepped closer, his dark eyes holding hers with an intense, unbreakable gravity. "Because I don't let people who save my life walk away. And I certainly don't let them go unprotected."
