Chapter 8 - The Council of Blood

The subterranean war room beneath the Sands Point estate smelled of cold stone, gun oil, and ancient power. The heavy oak mahogany table—carved from a single tree felled in the seventeenth century—sat surrounded by the remaining capos and elders of the Moretti syndicate.

They sat in tense, suffocating silence.

The double doors swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

Adrian Moretti walked in. He wasn't wearing a suit jacket; his black shirt was rolled up at the sleeves, his holster strapped tight across his broad chest, and a fresh scar grazed his jawline from the chaos of the night before.

Behind him walked Salvatore Moretti—hands bound in heavy plastic zipties, shoved forward roughly by two armed guards. And trailing just behind them, flanked by elite security, was Hannah Carter, holding Ellie’s small hand securely in hers.

Old Man Rossi, the eldest and most influential capo on the council, leaned heavily on his silver-headed cane, glaring at Adrian.

"You've turned the estate into a slaughterhouse, Adrian," Rossi rasped, his voice like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "Bruno and his men are dead in the west wing. Vincent is locked in the basement. You've brought civilian women into our war room. Have you lost your mind?"

Adrian pulled out the head chair at the end of the table and sat down slowly, resting his forearms on the polished wood. He didn't speak immediately. He let the crushing silence suffocate the room.

"Lost my mind?" Adrian finally spoke, his voice dangerously low. "Or did I finally find it?"

Adrian motioned to one of his guards, who slammed a heavy metal flash drive onto the center of the table.

"What is that?" another capo demanded nervously.

"That," Adrian said smoothly, "is the complete digital ledger of the Bellini Corporation's financial transactions over the past twenty years. Every bribe paid to politicians in Albany. Every shell company used to launder drug money through Queens. And every illegal toxic dumping site that poisoned municipal water supplies—including the one that killed innocent families and left children with chronic, life-threatening genetic illnesses."

Sal paled visibly, struggling against his zipties. "You're bluffing. Vincent wiped the mainframes!"

"Vincent was smart," Adrian agreed, a dark smirk playing across his lips. "But he was arrogant. He kept an encrypted physical backup in his personal safe beneath his quarters. My security team decrypted it three hours ago."

Adrian leaned forward, locking his gaze onto Old Man Rossi. "Vincent didn't just try to poison me because I was 'getting soft.' He poisoned me because I discovered he was planning to sell our entire syndicate out to the federal government in exchange for immunity and a retirement in the Cayman Islands. He framed a civilian housekeeper—Hannah Carter—to take the fall for his treason."

The room erupted into furious murmurs. Capos began shouting over one another, glaring sideways at Salvatore, who had brought Vincent into the inner circle in the first place.

"Silence!" Adrian's voice cracked like a whip, instantly freezing the room.

He stood up, walking slowly around the table until he stood directly behind Salvatore. He placed a heavy, crushing hand on his cousin's shoulder.

"Family is everything in this syndicate," Adrian whispered into Sal’s ear. "Except when family becomes a cancer. Salvatore... you brought the viper into our house."

Sal trembled, tears of absolute terror spilling down his cheeks. "Adrian, please... I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know he was working with the feds!"

"Ignorance is not an alibi in the Moretti family," Adrian said softly.

He drew his sidearm, pressed the cold barrel against the back of Sal’s neck, and pulled the trigger.

The heavy thud of Sal’s body hitting the stone floor echoed through the subterranean room. No one blinked. No one moved. The capos stared straight ahead, realizing with chilling certainty that Adrian Moretti was more dangerous, more ruthless, and more absolute than he had ever been in his entire reign.

Adrian calmly holstered his weapon, wiped a speck of dust from his sleeve, and turned his attention back to the council.

"The cleaning is finished," Adrian announced coldly. "Meeting adjourned."
