Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Queens

Midnight descended over Long Island Sound, casting long, skeletal shadows across the sprawling Moretti estate. Inside the master suite, Ellie had finally fallen asleep, curled up on the oversized velvet sofa with Rosie clutched tightly in her small arms.
Hannah sat at the edge of the adjoining sitting room, staring out the floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass at the dark, churning ocean. A steaming cup of chamomile tea sat untouched on the marble table beside her.
The door clicked open, and Adrian walked in. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms. He carried a heavy manila folder.
"She's sleeping," Adrian said quietly, pulling up a chair opposite her.
"She's exhausted," Hannah replied, her voice flat, devoid of emotion. She didn't look at him. "Allergy medications make her drowsy. Though I suppose carrying life-saving medical gear for a stranger takes a lot out of a four-year-old."
Adrian placed the manila folder on the table between them and slid it forward.
Hannah looked down at it suspiciously. "What is this?"
"Background check," Adrian said simply. "Or, more accurately, the truth about why a housekeeper from Queens carries pediatric epinephrine in a child's backpack."
Hannah’s breath hitched. She slowly reached out, flipped open the folder, and stared at the printed documents inside. Birth certificates, medical records, police reports, and bank statements—all detailing her life before she took the job at the Moretti estate three months ago.
"You investigated me," she whispered, her anger flaring up again.
"In my world, trust is a commodity traded in blood," Adrian replied calmly. "I had to know who you were. And what I found... was fascinating."
He tapped a finger on one of the documents. "Hannah Miller. Former lead forensic toxicologist for the NYPD’s elite crime lab. Resigned six months ago under mysterious circumstances. Single mother. And your daughter’s rare, severe nightshade allergy? It’s not just an allergy. It’s an exact genetic match to a rare metabolic condition caused by environmental exposure in industrial chemical plants—specifically, the ones owned by the Bellini Corporation."
Hannah closed her eyes, a single tear escaping and tracking down her cheek. The armor she had worn so carefully for months finally cracked.
"Vincent knew," Hannah whispered, her voice breaking. "When I worked for the city, I found chemical runoff reports linking Vincent’s shell companies to illegal toxic dumping in Queens. Poisoning the water supply. My husband... he tried to whistleblow. They killed him. They made it look like an overdose. And when I kept digging, they threatened Ellie. So I ran, changed my name, dyed my hair, and hid in the lowest possible place I could find—cleaning the floors of the monster who controlled them all."
Adrian stared at her, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with terrifying clarity. Vincent hadn't just tried to poison Adrian today; he had been eliminating a loose end from his past all along.
"You didn't stumble into my study by accident today, did you, Hannah?" Adrian asked softly.
Hannah opened her eyes, meeting his dark gaze without flinching. "No. I knew Vincent was planning something. I saw him slip the vial into my cart this morning. I couldn't stop him myself—if I raised an alarm, his men would have killed Ellie and me before we reached the driveway. My only chance... was to get inside your study and let you find the cure before it was too late."
Adrian leaned back in his chair, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. Not a smile of cruelty, but of profound, stunned respect.
"You used a mafia boss as a shield for your daughter," Adrian said, his voice laced with dark amusement. "You played Russian roulette with my life just to survive."
"I played the only hand I was dealt," Hannah retorted fiercely.
May you like
Adrian reached across the table, his large hand covering her trembling one. His skin was warm, solid, and impossibly strong. "The game is over, Hannah. Vincent is in the vault. And the Bellini Corporation? I’m going to tear it down to the foundation. But you and Ellie... you stay here. Under my roof. Under my protection."
Before Hannah could protest, a sudden, deafening explosion shook the entire mansion.
