Chapter 7 - Breach at Dawn

The blast tore through the western wing of the estate, shattering windows and rattling the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite. Alarms wailed instantly—a shrill, automated shriek cutting through the darkness.
Ellie bolted awake on the sofa, letting out a sharp cry and burying her face in Rosie’s plush fur.
Hannah sprang to her feet, pulling her daughter into her arms. "What was that? A bomb?"
Adrian was already moving. In a fraction of a second, he had drawn his sidearm, kicked open the armory panel behind his desk, and pulled out an MP5 submachine gun, tossing a Kevlar vest toward Hannah.
"Sal’s loyalists," Adrian cursed under his breath, his face hardening into granite. "When Vincent was locked up, the remaining captains in the syndicate must have assumed I was weak. They’re making their move."
"We need to get out of here!" Hannah shouted over the blaring alarms.
"No," Adrian said, grabbing her by the shoulder and guiding her and Ellie toward the reinforced panic room built into the back of the master closet. "This suite is a standalone bunker. They can breach the walls, but they can't breach this core."
"And the guards?" Hannah asked, her voice shaking as she clutched Ellie tightly.
"They’re already engaging," Adrian replied grimly.
Suddenly, heavy gunfire erupted outside the master suite. The distinctive rat-tat-tat of automatic weapons echoed through the corridor, followed by the shattering of wood and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the marble floor.
Adrian pushed Hannah and Ellie into the reinforced vault, stepping inside behind them. He tapped a biometric keypad, and the six-inch-thick steel door slid shut with a heavy, hydraulic seal, locking them inside absolute safety.
Through the internal security monitors mounted on the vault wall, they watched the carnage unfold.
Six masked mercenaries, heavily armed and wearing tactical gear bearing the insignia of the Brooklyn syndicate, blasted their way through the double doors of the master suite. They fanned out across the room, rifles raised, searching for targets.
Leading the group was a scarred enforcer named Bruno—one of Sal’s most vicious lieutenants.
"Moretti!" Bruno roared into the empty room, his voice echoing through the intercom. "Come out and save your skin! The council has voted! You're done!"
Inside the vault, Hannah watched the monitors with bated breath. She looked down at Ellie, whispering soothingly into the little girl's dark curls, trying to shield her ears from the noise.
Adrian stood calmly before the control console, his fingers dancing across a digital keypad. He didn't look panicked; he looked like a chess grandmaster about to deliver checkmate.
"You think breaking into my bedroom makes you king?" Adrian muttered to himself.
He pressed a single red toggle switch.
On the monitors, the floor beneath Bruno and his mercenaries suddenly gave way. The expensive Persian rug and imported marble tiles collapsed into a ten-foot pit filled with jagged iron spikes and industrial-grade security traps—a contingency Adrian had installed decades ago, long before he ever imagined needing it against his own blood.
Shrieks of agony echoed through the audio feed as the mercenaries plunged into the darkness.
Bruno managed to catch the edge of the pit with one hand, dangling dangerously over the spikes. He looked up toward the camera lens, terror distorting his scarred face.

Adrian picked up the intercom mic, his voice booming through the ruined suite with terrifying clarity.
"Tell the council," Adrian whispered coldly, "that the king is wide awake."
