Chapter 3 - The Sterling ManorThe rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time Claire’s rented cab crested the iron gates of the Sterling estate. Through the fog and driving sleet, the sprawling stone mansion loomed like a gothic fortress against the dark timberline. Half of the east wing was a blackened, smoking ruin. Fire engines lined the winding driveway, their emergency strobes cutting erratic red and blue streaks across the weeping willow trees.

Claire paid the driver, ignored his shouted warnings about her condition, and marched straight toward the police tape cordoning off the main entrance.

"Ma'am! You can't pass," a young patrol officer shouted, stepping into her path. "This is an active crime scene. The structural integrity of the east wing is compromised—"

"I am Claire Morgan," she interrupted, her voice cutting through the roar of the idling fire trucks with a chilling authority. "And my husband is inside. Or at least, the man who pretended to be dead for six months is."

Before the officer could radio for backup, Detective Vance’s unmarked sedan pulled up hard on the gravel beside them. Vance leaped out, slamming the door, and flashed his badge at the patrolman. "Let her through. She’s with me."

They ducked under the yellow police tape and hurried past the clusters of firefighters rolling up hoses and paramedics tending to soot-blackened security guards. As they rounded the corner toward the ruined east wing, a heavy-set forensics tech was packing gear into a metal case near a shattered set of French doors.

"Vance!" the tech called out, wiping ash from his forehead. "You're not going to believe what we found inside the master study. The fire started here—accelerant was poured straight across the hardwood floor. But that's not what killed him."

"Killed who, Miller?" Claire demanded, stepping past Vance.

The tech hesitated, looking nervously from Claire's swollen belly to her fierce, unblinking eyes. "The homeowner. Julian Sterling. He’s sitting in a leather armchair by the unburnt hearth. Single gunshot wound to the chest. Gun still in his hand—looks like a staged suicide at first glance. But the safe behind his desk? It’s blown wide open. And the files inside are missing."

Claire pushed past them, ignoring the shouts of caution, and stepped across the threshold into the charred study.

The room smelled of wet ash, ozone, and copper. Through the gaping hole where the exterior wall had collapsed, gray rain poured in, hissing against the cooling embers of the hearth. In the center of the room sat a massive mahogany desk. Behind it, slumped in an executive leather chair, was a man in his late forties with distinguished graying temples.

Julian Sterling.

Except... Claire had seen his face before. Not in financial magazines. Not on television.

She stared at the dead man's hands—specifically, the distinct, curved scar across his left knuckle. It was the exact same scar she had stared at across a candlelit dinner table every night for seven years.

Claire stumbled backward, her breath catching in her throat as the room spun violently around her.

"It wasn't Ethan," she whispered, her hands clawing at her chest. "The man I married... the man who lived with me, slept beside me, laughed with me... was never Ethan Morgan at all."
