Chapter 6 - Blood and FireThe rain outside hammered against the glass as the makeshift delivery ward was set up in the grand library of the Sterling estate, away from the smoke of the east wing. Outside, the muffled shouts of state troopers hunting Ethan through the sprawling, flooded estate grounds echoed through the shattered windows.

"Push, Claire! Push!" Dr. Hayes commanded, his hands gloved and ready, sweat pouring down his forehead.
Claire roared, her fingers digging deep into the velvet upholstery of the antique sofa. Every ounce of her physical and emotional trauma—the fake death, the burning building, the stolen embryo, the betrayal of the man she loved—channeled into a single, primal force of survival.
She wasn't just fighting for herself anymore. She was fighting for the life growing inside her, regardless of whose blood ran through its veins. This baby was hers. Born of her pain, carried by her body, nurtured by her soul.
"I see the head!" a paramedic shouted, holding a sterile towel. "One more big push, Claire!"
With a final, earth-shattering scream that drowned out the distant wail of sirens outside, Claire arched her back.
WAAAAAH!
The sharp, piercing cry of a newborn infant sliced through the tension of the ruined manor. The medical team moved with practiced precision, suctioning the airways, wrapping the tiny, squirming form in a warm blanket, and lifting the baby up into the harsh light of the rescue lamps.
"It's a boy," Dr. Hayes whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he gently placed the crying infant directly onto Claire's chest. "A healthy, full-term baby boy."
Claire wept, great, wracking sobs of pure relief and exhaustion, as she pulled the tiny bundle against her heart. The baby quieted almost instantly, feeling the steady, familiar rhythm of her pulse.
"Hello, little one," Claire whispered, kissing the damp tufts of dark hair on his head. "You're safe. You're finally safe."
Standing near the door, Sophie smiled softly through her tears, while Detective Vance stood guard, a radio pressed tightly to his ear.

"Vance," a voice crackled over the radio speaker amidst a flurry of static. "We got him. He tried to take a speedboat across the lake, but the engine seized near the spillway. Ethan—or whatever his real name is—is in handcuffs. He's going away for a very, very long time."
Vance let out a long breath, lowering the radio, and nodded grimly toward Claire. The nightmare was over. The monster was caged.
