Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs"Drop the weapon, Ethan!" Vance roared, his service pistol locked dead on the impostor. "It’s over. The clinic’s hard drives are in our possession, Vanessa is in custody down at District Four, and every federal agency in the tri-state area has your biometric profile."

Ethan looked around the room, assessing the laser dots dancing across his coat, the shattered French doors, and the ruined east wing. For a second, his fingers tightened around the grip of his gun. His eyes flicked toward Claire, a flash of genuine, unhinged grief crossing his features.

"You really should have stayed in the hospital, Claire," Ethan murmured, his voice laced with tragic finality. "We could have had everything."

Then, with lightning speed, Ethan didn't raise the gun at the police. He pivoted, dropped to one knee, and fired a single round directly into the floorboards beneath the heavy mahogany desk.

CRACK.

A hidden hydraulic latch beneath the desk released with a deafening snap. Before the tactical team could open fire, a concealed floor-vault slid open, venting a hiss of pressurized white nitrogen vapor into the room. Ethan lunged backward, plunging headfirst into the sub-floor escape tunnel just as a hail of rubber bullets and flashbangs detonated across the study.

"Don't let him reach the boathouse!" Vance yelled, diving through the smoke as troopers swarmed the hidden opening.

Claire staggered forward, coughing from the lingering sulfur and nitrogen smoke, her hands locked tightly around her abdomen as a sharp, agonizing contraction ripped through her lower back.

"Miss Claire!"

A small pair of arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Claire looked down. Sophie stood there, her serious gray eyes shining with fierce loyalty through her pale face.

"Sophie... you shouldn't be here," Claire gasped, leaning against a bookshelf for support. "It's not safe."

"I had to come," Sophie whispered, holding up a heavy, steel-encased flash drive. "When the police found my aunt’s luggage in her car, I told them where she hid the master keys to Sterling’s off-site servers. This has everything. Every transaction, every DNA switch record... and the medical override codes for the Genesis clinic."

Claire stared at the flash drive in the little girl's hand. The sheer magnitude of what Sophie had carried—what she had protected even while trapped in a burning room—was staggering.

"You're a hero, Sophie," Claire whispered, stroking the girl's dark curls.

Suddenly, a terrifying warmth flooded down Claire’s legs. Her breath hitched. The contraction didn't fade away like the Braxton Hicks of the morning; it locked her muscles into an unrelenting, agonizing grip.

Dr. Hayes—who had arrived in an emergency medical response van trailing the police—burst through the shattered French doors with a portable stretcher. He took one look at Claire’s white face and the dampness staining her robe, and his eyes went wide.

"My God," Dr. Hayes shouted, signaling two paramedics. "Her water just broke. We have active placental separation. We are delivering this baby right now, right here in the manor!"
